Raise my GPA to at least 3.3. It's currently way below 3.0, with great grades from now, it's more than possible.
Work in a research lab with a great amount of commitment. Thankfully, it is close to my classes and I can be there daily. This includes frequently reading (obviously) papers, writing papers for the PI (practice), and eventually writing a senior thesis. Unless I want to write the thesis for practice, GPA must be at that 3.3 by the time I graduate. I will be getting credit during the year and hopefully a grant for the summer(s).
Shadow some doctors during any breaks.
Volunteer in a hospital on a weekly basis (already in the process).
Volunteer in a free clinic whenever I can, ideally more in the summer.
Volunteer to do clinical research for a few months with weekly commitment.
Study for the MCAT junior year summer + into senior year (when I write my thesis).

How would this ^ minus the significant research look like? If I take out the research, I would help some lab this summer and hopefully learn something, but it would not go farther than that?

no one can tell you if you can accomplish something or not... only you know how motivated you will be

With your GPA you should be less concerned with research and more concerned with pulling your GPA up. Research is a secondary part of the application. GPA and MCAT are of primary importance. To be viable for MD you should shoot for a 3.5+ and 30-35 if possible. If that GPA is not possible consider looking into SMP programs to boost your GPA, and while doing your SMP gain your exposure to medicine through volunteering.

I'm hoping to get it to a 3.5, this would be with a huge +trend and I understand research is not as important, but I need to decide whether I can do it or not, now.

Grade replacement is your friend, apply DO.

Time, isn't. I'd rather take higher up courses than repeat, not graduate, not get financial aid. Replacing classes will have to wait until I graduate.
