Hello everyone!

I am starting my second year of grad school, seeing clients for the first time in this program, and starting to record hours for internship apps (thank you time2track!). My question is this: Can I count clinical hours completed before starting grad school towards internship apps? I did a lot of neuropsych testing while in undergrad under the supervision of a clinical psychologist/neuropsychologist. Can I count those hours (if I can get records of demographics) or can I only count hours accrued while enrolled in grad school?

Thanks for your help!

My understanding is that no, you cant. You can only count hours that are applied to doctoral level training from an official program approved practicum. I dont fully undersatand the logic, but think it has to do with the fact that you have to have been provided formal training supervision (not just a supervisor).

I can get you a more definitive answer from APPIC, as I have the "official" answer somewhere in my e-mails (it comes up every year), though generally the answer is no. According to the APPIC form, hours acrued pre-doctorally are hours that were completed while in doctoral training. There should also be a spot for MA/MS hours, though they are seperated out, and do not include any undergraduate hours. It sounds like a good experience, so you could probably mention it in an essay and/or list it on your CV.

There is actually a section on the APPIC application that is focused on "other Clinical Activities." It is in this section that you can describe the number of hours and type of predoctoral clinical experiences you have had.

Also remember that you will be submitting a CV and essays. Be sure your CV highlights your previous experience. You should probably estimate the number of neuropsych batteries you administered and include it in your vita. The appic application is only part of the story. Training directors do read your CV and other supplemental materials very very carefully.
