I am overseas trained pathologist and currently working in a subspecialty pathology laboratory of a teaching hospital of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com

United State</ST😛</st1:country-region> since last 4 years. I am actively involved in clinical and research work with many publications. I am planning to start my pathology residency in next July. Can I get any credit in residency (e.g. reduction in training period or other benefits) for my previous work in Pathology field?

I have seen a few people in situations similar to yours. They were residents just like everyone else.

I think you're stuck doing the full residency. We have had residents over the years who were full attendings in their country of origin, but when they came to the US they had to re-do everything. It's the unfortunate nature for international physicians, but I guess it protects the US medical system from being overrun by outsiders. And it prevents not-very-qualified US students from going to foreign countries to receive their training and then come back to practice.

The American Board of Pathology (www.abpath.org) details this reasonably well in its downloadable Booklet of Information. Look under "training requirements." It specifies that training must take place in an ACGME (U.S.) or RCPSC (Canada) accredited program and that advanced credit is not offered.

I thought there used to be a small amount of time that could be counted, if your program director accepted it, but the phrasing in the current BoI seems to quash that theory. I would encourage you to read for yourself, however, or discuss it with ABPath. Obviously, no-one here is a true authority.
