My parents don't want me to go to medical school because they don't want me to take out loans.

So they will not be filling out the fafsa. I will basically have to tell them that "I got a full ride scholarship to medical school", otherwise they will give me a really hard time. (They don't care if I go to medical school or not, they just care that I dont take out loans).

Are there merit scholarships in certain medical schools that don't need parental income info?
Will I get federal aid loans if I don't have parental income info?

Parents won't pay for medical school either. They make less than 70k btw

Yes, you can still take out federal loans without your parental info.

We have to fill out the parent info on FAFSA if we want to be considered for need-based scholarships, but it might be school dependent.

The actual answer is that it depends. If you have a bachelors degree, which almost every medical school student nowadays does, you will be able to fill out FAFSA on your own before the age of 25.

Good luck.

as others have mentioned, you do not need parental information for the FAFSA if you are applying for loans to med school. You will almost certainly qualify for the full Stafford loan and whatever that doesn't cover can be covered by the GradPLUS loans. Institutional loans are dispersed at the discretion of the financial aid office, which will usually request parental information to make better decisions about who to give need based aid.

Your plan should just be to fill out FAFSA, hope you get accepted into medical school, and when you do fill out the schools financial aid paperwork, telling your parents that if they don't fill it out, they are actually hindering you ability to get free money to fund school. Even if they don't help out at all, you can take out loans for the full amount by yourself.

A lot of med schools will only consider you for institutional grants or scholarships if you include your parents' financial info on FAFSA, so you should tell your parents they'll actually be screwing you over for free money if they refuse to let you include their information on there.

It sounds like your parents need to get their heads out of their assess. They're not helping you, they're hurting you!
Tell them that if they don't fill out the forms that you'll have to join the military.

lol, this actually works, though it wasn't my intention. I mentioned possibly looking into the militar scholarship to my parents. My dad flipped out and offered to pay a portion of my COA.

My parents also refused to fill out the FAFSA. I get all necessary loans, but cannot apply for need-based scholarships at my medical school.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but what is the timeline for applying to financial aid as an applicant this cycle?

I did not realize that medical/graduate school also offer need-based "grants"?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Would it be too late to apply for Fin Aid, after getting an acceptance? Or at least completing an interview?

Pretty sure it's the same timing as for undergrad, as in, FAFSA for the next school year (2014-2015) doesn't open up until January 1st. File as early as possible and get your taxes done so you can use the IRS retrieval tool. The later you submit your FAFSA, the less institutional aid money there is available (if the school offers any in the first place).

Some medical schools offer need-based grants, but it's institution-dependent, and the majority of med students receive mostly unsubsidized federal loans. Schools that do offer institutional aid (grants and scholarships) usually require parental information, regardless of whether you're dependent/independent on FAFSA.

This is very true- and you might well be qualified to receive some aid! Regardless though, you should be able to get loans on your own if needed. Good luck!

The fafsa also works for federal loan programs.

I didn't even know there was a reason to include parental info. Also, your parents sound nice.

Why do your parents feel the way they do?
If you know the answer to that, it might be easier to figure out a way to gain their support. Even if you don't need it to get your student loans, it would probably be less stressful.
