I was wondering if i do 1 year of IM residency, and THEN decide to switch over to EM residency.... will my 1st year of IM count towards the EM residency... or will i have to repeate that 1st year if i switch over to EM?

and how long is EM reisncy? 3 or 4 years?

There are 3 types of EM programs. 3 year, 2-4 where you have to do a prelim/trans year before you actually get in the ED and a 4 year type. You prob could use your 1st year of med for the 2-4 type but will most likely have to take a year off before you started unless a pgy-2 spot opens up.

There's one beautiful aspect aspect about EM - we're like the Statue of Liberty, welcoming the "wretched refuse" from distant shores into our field. Every program has an EM-1 class with a few PGY-(n+1) folks thrown in.

Typically, we get a lot of converts from surgery. The surgical intern year is apparently carefully designed to convince future surgeons of the appeal of EM!

The most you can count toward your residency is 6 months. This is according to RRC guidelines. Rarely, however, is 6 months granted. Usually only 3-4 months can be granted. This must be agreed upon BEFORE you start your residency.

For a 2-4 program, your year of internal medicine will count toward your prelim year. So you could start as a PGY-2 at a 2-4 program.

Programs that are 3 and 4 years long (1-4 or 1-3) will require you to apply through the match again. You may find a PGY-2 slot that opens up where you can apply. If appointed, you might start as a PGY-2 and then need to complete 6-8 months more after the end of your residency.
