I am applying to radiology this year. I think I am a fairly competative applicant so hopefully I will match. Of course I will also apply to TY and prelim programs as that goes with the gig. However, do to personal reasons, if I dont match into radiology I would rather take a year off and re-apply rather than do an internship. Is it possible to designate your TY/prelim position so that you only get it if you get the categorical (radiology in my case) as well.

Yes, it's very straightforward to do this. You rank your radiology programs first, then create a supplemental PGY-1 list for each of your radiology matches (i.e. you can change the order of your choices for PGY-1 spots based on your radiology match). You can also make sure that if you don't match in rads, that you match nowhere.

it was explained to my class just as our sith master explained - nothing to add there.

i would point out that you could try rank a prelim type of year at your home program as a backup. or maybe talk to the PD of the surgery or IM program and see if they'd consider you for a spot. this way you'd get your prelim year taken care of while still being able to stay put for another year while you re-apply for radiology pgy-2 spots.
