I am kind of Non-traditional student and work full time as a chemist and My Boss found out last monday that I am applying to Dental School For the class of 2009.

I used to work full time as a chemist, too. Men were a whole lot more impressed by the whole "I'm a chemist" thing than by me being a dental student. (I'm a female.)

I don't find dentistry sexy at all. I prefer firefighters, marines, coal miners, lumberjacks, professional hockey players, things of that nature. 😛

Costanza: I'm a... marine biologist
(from a distance, .5 seconds later): Is anyone here a marine biologist?!?!

is there anyway you can tell people that you're a dental student but don't use that word ? something funny and cute ???? I have a friend he's an optomelogist but he said that he's "eye mechanic shop" ... 🙂 hihihi it's cute hm... cuz I don't want to tell anyone I'm a dental student either ... ok girls, try to think what word should we use ????

When I told people I was going to dental school, I get reactions like..."ooh that's gross working in people's mouths" or "I wouldn't want to inflict pain on people all the time."

Or the infuriating..."I heard you got into dental hygiene school."

very nice thread! notice how several dentists or aspiring dentists in this thread admitted that being a dr is "sexier" and "moving up" as compared to being a dentist.

Nothing says sexy like having the time to resurrect a 2 year old thread in a troll-like fashion. Congratulations you stud.

When I tell men that I am a dental student, they just say, "that's impressive" or "you must be really smart" or "Oh, so you're gonna be a dental hygentist" and don't seem to care. The last statement bugs the hell out of me and I get that quite often. I don't know if I get these comments because they are intimidated or if it is because guys just really don't care what a girl does for a living as long as she is pretty???? What do other ladies get as reactions? I am curious....

oooooh yeah...that hygienist comment really bugs me, especially with how frequently it's asked! no offense meant to anyone in that field, but it's just insulting for someone to assume that a girl can't be an actual dentist...guess we just gotta flood the market until no one asks that anymore ;-) one of my ex's parents were kinda pushing the "marriage" concept into conversations towards the end of that relationship--i heard a lot of comments about having a dentist in the family... one reason i love my boyfriend now is that he totally supports what i'm trying to do with my life and actually thinks it's pretty cool--other guys i've dated were just like "oh really? that's nice" *yawn*

as far as guys dropping the dental school comment into a conversation...personally, when i was single i found it attractive simply because it means the guy is on a similar intellectual level...but if you have no personality, i'm walking away (sometimes running). i'd beware of any person who would date you just for the possibility of getting near that imminent wealth though--ie, golddiggers. plus i feel that if a person is truly into you for who you are, your occupation or future occupation wouldn't matter but that's just MHO...

You may think I'm crazy, but I find engineers to be incredibly sexy in addition to those on your list... My boyfriend's an engineer 😀

Used the line many a time. Im actually a dental student. Blah BLah. Girls just love the smell of success!!! A line that also works is "I have a talent for causing things pain" Only the bad girls like that one though....hehe 😀

Engineers? You mean those pasty nerds who sit indoors programming all day? 😉 Just kidding. I went to Virginia Tech for undergrad, so I joke my nerdy engineering friends all the time.

The equality in the relationship is def imp when a woman is a dentist. My bf kinda is sad(not intimidated though) that i will end up making money more than him if that ever will happen. It's the idea of self-confidence, not only in every aspect that he is now, but also on a material level. I definitely wish dentistry would not make much money, just for the reason of me and him being equal in every aspect - i would not care about it, but i care now because i see that he does. The good prospect is that possibly he could have his own business and i would have mine, and we would complement each other then also in a material way. Plus, since i will be in debt for the longest time, it should be ok in the imidiate future! 🙂

Anyone care to share about any tendencies they see with their bf's or gf's?

I've been married for 8 years and everyone congratulates my husband when they hear I'm going to dental school. He loves it! I see it as motivation for him to further his own career and so does he. A little friendly competition even among spouses is totally healthy, plus the outcome is great for both of you there are no losers here. So you go for it and if he is worth anything he will be totally happy for both of you!

well my college is known for its engineering and science departments...i have a lot of friends in both areas so i guess it makes sense for me to be attracted to them ;-) but i certainly won't object if you have a fireman calendar you'd like to pass along  😀
