I'm a new oral surgeon in private practice. Currently board eligible and have hospital privileges. However the only time I have been at the hospital so far is for my own postop patients which has been rare. I havent really had the referrals/cases yet that require going to the OR... However I would still like to maintain privileges in the event I need to admit and take my patient to the OR.

Would this be an issue when reapplying for privileges at reappointment at the 2 year mark? I feel like this is relatively common and am wondering if surgeons like me can maintain privileges or cannot because of lack of hospital cases.

Typically, you need to take call (usually trauma and infections) to maintain privileges. For that, the hospital is lucky to have you. With that in mind, you need to go see those patients when you are called, as well as keep current on your charting.

Like everyone, hospitals have incentives for having you on staff.

Probably hospital dependent.
I am able to maintain privilleges without taking a call in all three hospitals i have privilleges at.

Do you have block time, or how easily can you book cases in the OR that you bring from your private practice?

Do you want to be a part-time attending at your hospital? Everything is negotiable. One of the OMFS in my hospital works part-time, his own practice is just minutes away. And the hospital reimburse half of his malpractice insurance.

no block time. Honestly idk. Never done a scheduled case in the OR. Only sent pts through the ED and took them to OR that way.
