As a new member, I would like to thank SDN for the wealth of knowledge all you guys have provided me! I would be dead in the water without this website.

My question is this. If you volunteer in a research lab for a semester or over the summer, does this count towards volunteer hours? The reason I ask is because at my school, before faculty will offer you research for credit, they want to see you in the lab as a volunteer for a period of time before they make the commitment of offering you credit.

I am unsure if this would only count as research experience, or would be a way to double dip into both areas. Some would call this cheating, but I call it time management!

*I tried to search this, but no threads seemed to answer this directly*

Thanks for any help! 👍

No. When you submit the application you list it under professional experience. There they ask whether it was paid, for credit or volunteer.

I would call it research. After all, in order for me to complete one of my undergraduate research projects, I had already exhausted all of my research hours. I basically volunteered my time in a research lab 20 hours/week under the guidance of a research advisor I had already been working with in order to complete my project.

previous posters said what i would have said but in a nicer way

All my research experiences went under research, whether I was paid or not.
