Can someone please explain the med school application process to me? (from taking the MCAT to getting accepted) Thanks!!

Another specific question I have is: are ECs and ECs hours submitted in the primary or secondary application? Or both?

~If ECs are only submitted in the secondary application, I would have an another summer to continue to improve my ECs 🙂

These questions have all been answered for in debt. Make use of the search function.

The medical school application process is like being promised a brand new puppy, and being shown photos of the cutest puppy you've ever seen, but not getting the puppy for 8 months. And then when you do finally get your new puppy, you can't touch it, or talk to it, or ask it what your position is on the waitlist.

The ECs are covered in both the primary and secondary, but the secondary sometimes asks more specific questions.

OP, the post that @BigBoss linked to (here is a clickable link if you're too lazy to copy and paste) is a goldmine of information that Lawper has put together over the years he's been here. The AMCAS instruction manual linked at the top of Lawper's post will give you detailed instructions on submitting your primary application and answer a lot of the questions that may come up. If you are looking for a more basic/ TL;DR description of the application process, then starting at the AAMC's website would be helpful. They have quite a few resources to help people figure out what they need to do to apply. @Goro loves to link to the University of Utah's website for their description of admissions requirements, so here their description of the application process. Most medical schools have similar descriptions on their own websites.

@Lawper after looking through your post again, I think that it might be a good idea for us to add a simple summary of the application process for people who are completely new to medical school admissions. Those of us who post here regularly have acquired a pretty in-depth knowledge of how everything works, but I don't remember seeing a post in there that describes in simple, easy-to-understand steps everything that you need to do to be ready to apply. Every detail is explained ad nauseam, but I think that a bulleted list that gives a quick overview of the basic requirements and steps could be helpful. I am pretty busy today, but I can try to put one together tonight if you want.

I'm drafting up something more in detail but here is a general outline. I propose a six-stage model for medical school admissions, something called Stages of Medical School Entry

Stage 0 - Exploratory Stage: This is where people explore different majors and career options and begin to try out medicine. They take a few biology courses, volunteer in clinical setting, shadow etc. to explore medicine and see if it's for them.

Stage 1 - Preparatory Stage: This is where people begin taking medicine a lot more seriously. They expand on their clinical and volunteering experiences, do research and prepare/take the MCAT.

Stage 2 - Application Stage: This is where people have taken the MCAT and begin preparing to apply to medical school. They get their letters, transcripts, application, essays etc. ready in June - August and wait for interviews.

Stage 3 - Interview Stage: This is where people get interviews from schools interested in them and they began preparing for various interviews, like traditional and MMIs. This usually spans from August to April.

Stage 4 - Acceptance Stage: This is where people get accepted into medical school. They can still continue interviewing at other places but their future is set.

Stage 5 - Matriculation Stage:
This is where people are committed to a single medical school (although they may be accepted from waitlists) and begin preparing to start first year of medical school.

The successful journey goes in order from Stages 0 to 5 without backtracking. Reapplication means something went wrong between Stages 1 and 3 and needs to be repaired.

Stage 2.5 - Admitting that you are powerless to control your II's

@Lawper, where do disbelief, bargaining, anger, depression, and acceptance fit into your model?

Looks great. I am working on something pretty similar, so I think that I will PM you what I have sometime this weekend and then we can combine it to form the Megazord or something along those lines.
