Can someone tell me if I have a chance?

Hi everyone,
I have an MCAT (april 2005) of 14p/11v/14b and GPA (sciences are about the same) of 3.9. My research has been going for a little over a year and a half, doing two summers and the school year in between. I also have some clinical experience for a shorter period of time, along with the assorted school clubs. I have a publication on which I am the second author under review right now.

What are my chances of acceptance into an MSTP program? Should I just apply to a normal M.D.? Will a denial from entrance into the MSTP program prevent me from enrolling in plain medical school?

Also, is submitting my application in late July a poor idea--will I still have a good chance at that time?

with those stats are u trying to make othr people miserable? I mean for real. I guess i should be the one asking that question being international with a 4.0 in biochemistry and 13b, 10p and a damn 7 in verbal. Ok, i do have three pubs , co-authprship, and two years of reseach experience. I think your chances are pretty good of getting in as long as you can support your research experience on the interviews, and im sure youll get plenty of those. By the way, which schools are you applying to? And can someone tell me what are my chances of getting into programs like baylor or collumbia with those poor MCAT scores. 🙁 . Should i even consider applyiong? i mean seein how pple with 38 are in doubt🙂

Someone with excellent grades / MCAT, a decent amount of research, and a potential publication will definitely be offered interviews for some MSTPs.

OK, to the OP, on paper you look good. A guy or gal with the same stats as yours but with publications will likely beat you. Sure there may be people like that but there won't be too many. Should that discourage you from applying? No way dude. Now, it's time to write good essays and perform well at the interviews. F*cking anyone of these things up can be the kiss of death for you.

To the second poster who responded to the OP. I think you're in a good situation too. Sure, I know you're worried about the 7 in verbal. I think that will be easily overlooked in favor of your other accomplishments. You have 3 publications. That's really awesome. Consider yourself blessed. Programs will be creamin' over you. I had similar stats and 3 publications as well and I got interviews from everywhere and got accepted to 7 of the 12 programs I interviewed at. You'll do just fine. Take a deep breath, let it out, walk to the bar, have a beer.

The biggest worry for your application would be that you are an international student. The MD-PhD funding opportunities are limited for international students. Perhaps the non-US citizens on this board can give advice on which schools to apply to. You should contact those schools and ask how many internationals they can support. Good luck.

You need at least a geen card to be funded by federal money (MSTP). Lots of schools have non-MSTP MD/PhD programs that will take forigners without green cards. There are also schools that are MSTP and fund foreign students internally thru private grants, and still list those students as being part of their MSTP pool.
And yes, I am a foreigner and also had an 8 in verbal back in the day. It never came up in the interviews though.

hey, thx for the advice, i gotta ask u, did u have a green card when u were applying, cause u say u were foreigner. Just curious. I am applying actually to only 5 schools that i know for sure accept internationals for md/phd, and besides less expenses🙂 wish me good luck, i just submitted my amcas,

I had a green card back then, which made things a whole lot easier. Green card is as good as a citizenship, only difference being you can't vote. I wish I could vote in the last presidential. What a fiasco.
