Are there any surgeons who have IBS out there? Is it possible to become a surgeon even if you have the condition?

And do you have to have 20/20 (or close) vision without glasses to be one?

Are you asking about irritable bowel syndrome ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irritable_bowel_syndrome ) or inflammatory bowel disease ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inflammatory_bowel_disease )? Students, residents, and practicing physicians in all specialties can be afflicted with either and any other number of ailments. So, yes. The question is, whatever disorder/dysfunction/ailment one has, can the individual safely assume the responsibilities of the chosen specialty. That is/those are questions that must be answered on an individual basis, ideally with the advice of professionals that know you and the status of your condition.....
And do you have to have 20/20 (or close) vision without glasses to be one?
There is no 20/20 vision requirement that I am aware of..... I have seen numerous med-students, residents, and attendings with corrective lenses. I even know of color-blind surgeons.... again, the answer is the same as the answer given to the first part of your question.

There is a similar thread along these lines but in reference to migraines..... http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=638706
...There are manic-depressives/bipolar individuals that also face similar lines of question. There are epileptics that face these questions...

...Ultimately each individual must be honest with themselves. You must recognize your individual particulars and how it can potentially effect and/or endanger your patients...

I don't know any surgeons with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but I always love medical syndromes best treated with an antidepressant.

As for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, or IBD, I knew a very successful surgeon from my school with Crohn's. Like any chronic medical condition, it does affect his daily practice, and I've seen him dash to the bathroom before. Still, he's able to perform his job very well.

My bowels are fine but I operate in reading glasses or loupes. I have great distance vision but old age has forced me into readers.

Cheisu, is that you?

It isn't old age. Its experience. 😉

the best surgeon I ever worked with had a total colectomy and ostomy.
Well, the ostomy kind of precludes the major concern of someone with IBS. If you've got IBS, you might be running to the bathroom all of the time. Having an ostomy...not so much.

i also have been legally blind without corrective lenses since around 11, and have irritable bowel syndrome.....intern year is going just fine so far (or at least as good as it gets)
