Hello,

I was wondering if one of my references will be fine for a science reference. The person who is writing me this letter was, at the time, my TA for cell biology (he is now a PhD). He has gotten to know me well and I feel he can write me a great letter, however I do not know if it is something I should use to apply to medical school. Will this be looked down upon even though now he is a PhD?

Thank you

You can use it. He was your teacher regardless of what degree he held at the time and you seem to know the person well, so they can provide an in depth letter of recommendation. Good luck! 😀

If I am reading your post correctly, at the time you took cell biology he was your TA and not your professor. I would say no cause I have been told many times that a TA is not your professor and you may know your TA better than your professor but you will downgrade your application’s chances of success. However, if he is currently a professor and you have had research experience or other academic interaction with him after he got his PhD I would say yes but as a last option. Your TA would be best used as an advisor or assest in helping you get a letter from your cell bio professor.

It should be fine; I've seen tons of LORs from TAs.
