Can you apply to both md and mdphd at same school/ cycle?

It depends on the school. The majority of schools ask you to choose a program in their application, and that where they prioritize the review of your application. After the primary review, you might be defer to the MD program, but that may be too late for interview slots. In some cases, particularly Texas schools, their MD/PhD programs are in AMCAS and their MD programs are in the Texas system (TMDSAS), thus, they are independent review events.
 
If it's within the same cycle and applying MD vs. MD/PhD at different schools, it's definitely possible in my experience. I do think that the two programs look for different things in their applicants, but I've known people to have success applying to both. LORs are slightly more complicated in my experience because more letters should be research focused for MD/PhD and if you're applying to both, it can be difficult for letter writers to speak to your intended career path.

I have heard that some MD/PhD programs frown upon individuals applying to both in the same cycle, but I'm unsure if that's actually true or not.
