One downside that I see in dentistry is that it seems like it's difficult to distinguish yourself and become well known nationally or internationally. Dentists basically do the same routine procedures, especially GPs. Are there any famous dentists known for their exceptional work? I read a lot about famous MDs, but no famous dentists.

haha, I think you may be looking into the wrong profession. Implants, restorations, and veneers will only get you so much attention. Ground breaking research could make you 'well known'. What famous MD's are you talking about, Kevorkian? Health-care professionals don't become famous, but rather admired and appreciated.

A downside...really!? Some people (including dentist) may not desire to be famous. Then again, being "famous" is all about how you define it. I know a well known dentist by the name of Dr. George Jenkins...ever heard of him? My hometown dentist is pretty famous within the community. Depends on how you look at it.

I don't mind not becoming famous. However, I wish that there was a more objective way to rate dentists. Right now a lot of people choose dentists based on their personality, how their office looks, etc. It's usually hard for patients to know what is good dentistry and bad dentistry. If there were more refined ways to rate the surgical and treatment skills of dentists, the best dentists would be able to stand out. For example, there could be a national ranking of dentists and the top dentists on the list would automatically get a lot of patients and recognition, because of their skills. Surgeons tend to be rated more objectively, because the best surgeons are usually associated with top research hospitals. In order to get there and stay there they have to be at the top of their field.

I'm becoming a dentist for many reasons and one of them is to become famous. Famous with my family and children for being a great dad and a great provider. Famous with my patients for providing exceptional care and outstanding service.

Dentistry is not a profession for the vain. It is a great profession for the OCD-detail oriented, and slightly arrogant/egotistical (I like to call it confidence).

If you want your face in People or on E!, then I suggest being the daughter of a large hotel chain owner.

But, if you mean appreciated and known, it is not uncommon for dentists to do great works and be well respected in their field and in health care: Mission trips, giving back to the community (give kids a smile, etc), active in your local and state Dental associations, etc.

How about ...
“Doc” Holliday of the Gun Fight at the OK Corral
Painless Parker the advertising wizard
Jack Miller the Indy car driver
GV Black the father of American dentistry
Zane Gray the writer supported his early writing career via his dental practice in New York City.
Gary Cuozzo played 10 seasons in the NFL while going to dental school and then ortho. school. He is an orthodontist in New Jersey now.

Aside from Black (who probably wouldn't be considered famous outside of the field), none of those people made the list because of their skills with a drill. 😉

If you need your ego stroked that badly, there are probably better fields to look at than dentistry.

You forgot about Drs. Jason and Colleen Olitsky, Jacksonville's Smile Stylists.

Gordon Christiansen and Frank Spear are famous within the dental community for their research and teaching. Bill Dorfman, Kevin Sands, and Sam Saleh have been made famous for their high profile clientele.

LOL nice. havent heard the name Jack Miller for awhile. He truly sucked something awful. I actually race against a couple of dentists locally. They're all "sponsored" by their practices.

I know a dentist who is famous for defrauding the government and doing almost 3 years of time for it.

Now he's a wealthy finance planner. He bounced back quite well after losing his dental license.

I'm not sure this is the famous you are looking for though.

Dr. Dre
Did a residency in Ortho, left it to pursue gangsta hood and invented the grills.

We have a guy in Illinois like your guy in Texas. Only difference is the Illinois guy defrauded insurance companies and not he government.
