NRMP says both applicants and programs have to submit by Feb 27th. But everyone seems to say that the programs submit them by early Feb?

Why would you wait until the deadline to submit?

Most applicants AND programs submit in late January. There is no reason to wait until the last minute.

Depends on when the last interview day is. Most programs take 1-2 weeks to process all the interviews and make a list. Once the list is in, it's easy to move a person around if new information comes in, so it's not fixed in stone until ROL deadline.

Most PD's learn that the NRMP system tends to slow down during the last 48-72 hours, so we usually have our lists in at least a week early.

If you email a PD and tell them their program is your #1 choice, should you expect to get any email reply from them?

If you don't hear back, is that an indication that they don't like you, or that they just might be bombarded with other stuff to do?
yes I am becoming paranoid 🙂

Mostly paranoid delusions. Don't take a lack of response seriously, although I think it is a bit rude.

When do most people send letters to their #1 program? I haven't even decided who my #1 program will be, but I want to let them know before it gets too late. Should I be sending a letter in the next week or so?

Wow APD, you think it's rude not to respond? (Well, i thought so too, but now I think it's more the norm than the exception...)

I haven't sent any "ur my number 1". I'm still thinking I might change my mind, and I am 100% against telling more than one program they're number one. I just think it's deceitful. Do you think it will hurt my chances at my actual number one if I dont tell them they're my number one? whew...paranoia runs amok!

No, I doubt it will help you either. Programs do the same thing in the match -- we rank people in the order we want them, basically ignoring how likely we think they are likely to come to our program. Like you, ranking people highly on my list that I think have no chance of coming to my program does not hurt me in any way.

I think, as hinted to above, that people worry far far too much in the match about things that are not under their control. Like when programs submit their rank list. It doesn't matter. It matters when yours is due! It also doesn't matter if you don't hear from programs, because every program is different and many consider the interview day their sole contact with you unless you call them for a specific question.

So chill out, relax, rank the programs in the order you want to go to them. Ask questions of programs you want to. If a program is your clear number one and it makes you feel better, tell them.

Yay! I dont have a clear number one yet, but I would love to end up in any of my top three. thanks 🙂

One must also remember that the match actually is applicant biased, meaning, the system will try and keep the applicant as close to his or her top choices. Its a jumble of "permutations" as one of the posters suggested but it clearly tries to make the applicant happy. Programs however are in a wait and see mode, hoping for the best.

There's no need to send a letter. They've already made their decision the end of the day you interviewed.
