I'm one semester away from graduating and I've racked up close to 20K in loans that I'd rather not start paying on now. Does anyone know if these can be deferred all the way through medschool? If not, how are you guys paying your undergrad debt off while you're in medschool?
As long as you are at least half-time student, you can defer the subsidized loans without paying interest. If you're not half-time, you can put it on hold, but the interest will accrue.

You can also defer the unsubsidized loans while enrolled at least halftime, but they do accrue interest. 🙁

what if you are out of school for a little while, then go back for post-bacc? How would you go about applying for deferral then?

The loan servicer will end your deferment when your school says you're no longer enrolled. Then the loan servicer will send you a notice that you have to start paying again. Sometimes this is 6 months after your enrollment ends, but not always. Basically, everybody needs to talk to everybody, and then stuff happens as you'd expect.

When you're back in school, your loan servicer will give you a deferment after they find out that you're enrolled. Some schools automatically notify the loan servicer (oh, so convenient). Or you might need to provide proof of enrollment. Your financial aid office at your school, and/or the registrar have the forms, undoubtedly.

Plan on needing to make a few payments after you're enrolled, while the paperwork goes through.

Cool, thanks alot! I assume the same holds true for medschool? Just provide proof of enrollment and they defer?

Yup as long as your at least half-time your more you can keep deferring. I been out of undergrad since 2002, and not in school for those years and have not paid a dime. Even if your not in school there is other deferments such as hardship deferments, forebarance, etc...

Moving to Financial Aid. I am sure that others have this question and expert opinions to be found there.
