Can you "fail" your internship?

I work as a nurse in pediatrics (working my way toward medical school... slowly) -- however, I was curious if you are able to "fail" your internship?

We get a roster every June of all the pediatric residents (PGY-1, PGY-2, PGY-3, and Chief). I was looking at the roster and noticed that one of the interns from last year is once again a PGY-1. How is that so?

Yes, and usually when that happens it's termination not repetition.
 
if you are extremely incompetent and a danger to patients, then you may be fired.



that pgy-1 you noticed who didn't advance may have taken time off for family issues or other reasons and may be just making up a month or two before advancing to pgy-2.
 
The med/peds residents have to spend extra time as interns. I've seen an instance where someone wasn't ready to move on but was making enough progress that the program extended their internship rather than letting them go (although I imagine this is not at all common).
 
Definately not a typo. Our hospital does these very elaborate posters with their photos and name and are printed professionally. I am sure someone would have caught that.

But aside from that reason, the pediatric dept. has 11 spots for each PGY. When I noticed this particular resident was a PGY-1 again, I looked to PGY-2 and found a resident who had not been there before. Thus, I assume they opened a PGY-2 slot and someone applied for it.

And regarding the med/peds -- our hospital does not have a med/peds residency.
 
You're probably right that if there is a new PGY-2, then its not a typo.

I mentioned that because my program did these very elaborate posters with all of our pictures, names, degrees, and PGY. The nice thing? It was our intern picture every year so we looked refreshed, young, thin, etc. The bad thing? Sometimes the PGY was wrong or even worse for some, the name spelled wrong.

I guess when there are over 400 residents, sometimes you get lazy proofreading these things.

Same thing at our hospital. There's a guy who's a 4th year resident this year who's name has been "Bob Smith, DO" since he started but he's an MD. Complains every year, never changed.

Thats not universally true, depends on the program.
