Hi, I'm going to be a sophomore next semester and I'm having a little trouble with my schedule.

Right now I have for the FALL:
- Chem101 with lab
- Cell Biology and Biochemistry
- Calculus
- Elective

And for the SPRING:
- Chem102 with lab
- Organic Chemistry 1
- Elective
- Elective

I think I would try to take Orgo II the summer after my sophomore year and then tae Phys102 the fall of my junior year. I have already taken Biology I and II and Physics 1 and I'm a Biology major. I think I want to take the MCAT after my fall semester in my junior year.

I'm just kind of confused as to what courses to take together, such as if Chem102 with O-chem 1 is advisable, so any help would be great. Thanks for your time 🙂

most schools don't allow you to take ochem until you finish gen chem. you should probably talk w/ an advisor as this is what your school pays them for.

regardless, you need 1 yr of physics, 1 year of gen chem, 1 year of ochem, and 1 year of biology to take the MCAT. i would also recommend microbiology and biochem as well prior to taking the MCAT.

Oh, well if my school did allow Ochem1 with GenChem102, is it okay? Or does a lot of Ochem1 have deal with stuff learned in chem102?

at my school, i used gen chem III in ochem I (quarter system).

Hmm. Hard to say. There are some topics like Gibbs free Energy that are needed for orgo 1, but to be honest Orgo1 is such a unique class that there really isn't anything to prepare fully for it. If your Chem dept. would allow it, I'd go ahead and take it with Gen chem 2. You can always put off orgo1 lab for later since it's a pretty long lab.

ok, so another question: is it really hard to take requirement classes while studying for the mcat? Say I wanted to take the Mcat in January, is it okay if i take orgo II that fall right before? or even physics II? thanks

the way i look at it, you get twice the studying. i'll be taking ochem while studying for and taking the mcat.
