Was thinking about transferring my fourth year, but I heard you have to d your last two years at the same residency program, is that right? thanks in advance

Yes, you can transfer for PGY-4; I’ve seen cases. Look for programs that “lose” many residents after PGY-3 due to fast tracking to child.

Thanks. I'm on the east coast and family on the left coast, so need to get back. The old PD thought I was talking about transferring (but was something else) and she mentioned that it might be an acme requirement. Good to hear as the alternative was to look for cali child fellowships.

1) you can transfer without needing to do a child fellowship. ( I believe Amygdara was referring to programs possibly having space to take G4s because of residents having transferred out.
2) If you WANT to do a CAP fellowship, there are LOTS of open slots right now.
3) There is a requirement to do 2 consecutive years in the same program, but they do not need to include the 4th year.

Hey, just wanted to up date for people who may consider this in the future. I did indeed end up transferring close to home--about 90 minutes away. My PD was great, very helpful and happy to see my go back home. For those looking to do this in the future, look at smaller programs who lose residents to child fellowships.

Is your diploma from the first or second institution?

There is also a rule that you need 12 months of continuous outpatient training at the same institution. If you don't have this by the end of PGY-III, better be sure your PGY-IV is all outpatient. A lot of programs don't replace PGY-IVs if they fast track. Taking a PGY-IV and graduating them with a statement that they are ready for independent practice can be too much of a risk.

Hey, would you mind sharing where you find these rules? They sound helpful.

"Resident experience in outpatient psychiatry must include 12 months FTE of organized, continuous, and supervised clinical
experience."

I'm not sure how this means that your 12 months of FTE have to be at the same place. You do need to see some of your patients longitudinally for a year, some of whom must be seen weekly for therapy, but programs definitely interpret the 12 months of FTE *continuous* experience liberaly, such that doing 75% effort for a year and then 25% for a year would be 12 months FTE and continuous. No where does it say "continuous at the same program."

Further argument against this is the later stipulation that if you fast track up to 20% of your outpatient required for general can be double counted with child, which would make no sense if the above was true.
