I'm currently a medical student in Canada thinking about one day practicing in the US. I am thinking of writing my Step 1 sometime soon but I do not believe I will want to apply to IM residency in the US as the way the matching systems work I would have to rank every Canadian option higher than any US option.
So what I am thinking of doing is completing medical school and residency in Canada and looking for fellowship, likely in Cardiology in the States.
I know that Canadian training is recognized as Board Eligible and is approved by ACGME, but I was interested in how practical and feasible this option is. I would likely want to pursue US training at one of the major centers. In addition, if it is feasible what are US fellowships looking for from an IM resident and is there anything particular to Canada that should be concerning?
I am interested in research and plan to pursue it during both medical school and residency training.
I am aware of the J1 Visa and H1B Visa issue, and ideally would like to get an H1B, but not sure how feasible that is either.
Thanks!
