Hi guys, as title says I am a Canadian Cardiology fellow. Was wondering how favorable Canadian grads are looked at in the Interventional Cardiology ERAS match, particularly for a top 10 program, ex. Cleveland Clinic, etc. I am pretty good in the research front, but not sure if coming from Canada / not having US connections / STEP scores will be a major hinderance?

thanks,

Didn't you post the same question in the Cardiology subreddit 10 days ago? There are not as many Attendings in SDN so I am not sure if you may get better answers here. It has become a match now and programs usually pick internally, though given your solid research profile you will definitely be a solid applicant. Not sure how the top 10 US programs pick candidates though and how being a Canadian would impact the application overall.

I've been in a similar situation as you so can comment somewhat. From what I know, Canadians are viewed quite positively. As a general rule, you'll likely be compared similarly to American applicants. The lack of STEP scores is a hindrance for H1 visa and potentially state medical licensing (for a few states not most), but if you are interested in a J1 and are flexible on location it shouldn't be an issue.

Having research will help you a lot, I think your typical Canadian cardio fellow who is applying for IC in the US is someone who is top of the pack in Canada already, because Canadian IC fellowships are excellent and often chosen by Canadian cardio grads anyways. If that is your case, I don't think you'll have much trouble matching.

As another alternative, the non-ACGME superfellowships are another great opportunity if the IC match doesn't work for whatever reason.

If you are interested, DM me, I can connect you with someone who is doing IC in the US as an ACGME fellow at a top 10 program.

From what I have seen Canadians end up at great places without issues. Training programs in Canada are elite and US programs seem to know this. I don’t think you have anything to worry about.
