hi,

i have read most of the posts...congrats to everybody who matched. i am looking for some advice/info. i am a canadian citizen in my third year of medical school (caribbean school). i am currently doing some rotation in canada but soon will be moving to the US to complete the remainder. i scored a 239 on my USMLE step 1...

i am interested in pm&r. i know it is competitive. any suggestions as to where i should try to do my elective in pm&r. i think my only way of securing a residency in this field is by making connections. are any of you canadian IMG's?

thanks for you help and good luck!

derek

As a Canadian IMG with English as your first language(?) I dont believe your situation would be much different than a USIMG(myself).

Your super step 1 score will get you tons of interviews at great programs. Read the thread by Cuts in the international medical student section on his perspective as an IMG using the match.

UVMs medical school allows IMGs to do elective rotations(they dont have a PM&R residency). I just went to their web page for info then called.

Its great that PM&R is attracting such highly motivated students.

krete,
so far you sound like a pretty strong candidate. do your elective where you would like to do your residency. this will show the program 1. your interest and 2. what you can bring to the program.

if you have time, partake in some research if you want a top notch program.

good luck

thanks for your response...i guess my question is, is there any canadians out there that have been accepted on an H1-B visa? unfortunately canadians can't get J1 visas.

thanks for you help...

hey derek,
i know i am replyin with a question, but why did u choose to go to the carribean? reason i ask, is i will be in ur shoes in a cpl of years.
i am a canadian citizen, i just graduated highschool and i am doin med skool now at university of Cairo.
I applied to windsor university at st.kitts, and i was accepted. i am also awaiting ireland's descision (s).
I can;t seem to choose,
Have you heard anything negative about windsor? Any reason i shouldn't go there?
do u no any other carribean schools that will take highschool graduates?

you may want to try Tufts , if you are a good candidate, also by doing an elective, you will have a prety good chance for an H-1b.

in reply to the question about windsor u in st kitts....i have only heard negative things. i could be wrong but i would really look into it before going. as far as ireland, MUA had some students from ireland transfer in...

good luck

krete,

i thought most canadian citizens go to the states under the J1 visa, and that it's hard to find a residency program that is willing to sponsor you for the H1-B visa??

as least, that's as far as i know of some of our school's grads who were matched in the US, and have gone south of the border. of course, the drawback of the J1 visa is that you have to go back to your home country for 2 years and that you cannot enter the US during that period. but i hear J1 visa is pretty easy to obtain.

re: j1 vs. h1b

my understanding is that, graduating from canada, both are difficult to obtain.

h1b can't be obtained until you get your license, ie. completed internship and passed step 3 (but state dependent)

j-1 can't be obtained unless you have a specific letter from your provincial ministry of health. I think, at least for Ontario, the letter is difficult to get.

I'm a canadian citizen at a US school. My hopeful plan is to do internship here on F1 OPT, and then get the H1b. I've called a number of schools, and they are willing to do the H1b for a US medical graduate.
