Well its only the third biggest based of the separation of surgical specialties and if you don't separate the family physicians who did a 1 year fellowship to become an emergency physicians. In reality it really is family, internal, FM + 1 emergency, surgical and than psychiatry. Also lets not forget that peds is considered a specialty and not a primary care in many parts of Canada ( some areas require you to be referred by a family physician in order to see a Ped).

On another note people have to understand that Canada shortage of physician is more so a distribution problem with more doctors in the city and very few doctors in the rural areas.

Here is the Canadian Psychiatric Associations response

How many psychiatrists are there in Canada?

There are currently about 4,100 psychiatrists in Canada. Demand for psychiatrists in Canada continues to exceed the supply. Many areas of the country lack adequate psychiatric services. Shortages are especially acute in rural and northern areas, even in Ontario.
