Ok, so I've thought about this before in life and recently have been giving it some more thought.

In short, when I was in college I called myself premed for a while, didn't want to study or do any extra work, wanted to graduate early, and I did. I got a B.S. with a 3.4something. I taught high school science for a couple years by way of an "emergency certification" program, didn't really like it, quit, and I got into law enforcement which I've been very successful with. I wanted to become a "fed" at one point so I went back to school for accounting for a summer session and a fall semester about three years after I got my B.S., working by night (12 hr. shifts) and schooling by day." In short, I did really bad at that due to some schedule changes causing me to often go more than 48 hours without any sleep. That's a serious safety concern for a law enforcement officer so I cut back on going to class (life trumps grades), and I also found out that my red-green color blindness would prohibit federal law enforcement so I basically gave up. Granted, that wasn't the best move, but it's what I did. I'm still in law enforcement, and I'm in a supervisory position. I've also got what's going on eight years now of volunteer experience. I do lots of things really.

I've always wanted to work in the healthcare community, and I used to work on a part-time basis as a paramedic. At any rate, I need only organic chemistry and physics to apply to either medical or pharmacy school. I'd apparently need calculus too for pharm school. That said, I have medical experience, but no pharmacy experience. I'm sure I could knock out the PTCB exam pretty easily, and I've got retail experience. In fact, I actually run two small retail operations right now. Regardless, I'll HAVE to relocate to take the prereqs I need to get anywhere in helathcare.

Why the interest in pharmacy? Well, I want to learn stuff about physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and so forth. It's just interesting to me, and I like reading about it even on my own. I actually used to teach human A&P to AP kids as a h.s. teacher. I want to use what I'd know to help out others, and (in relation to pharmacy) I really like the retail environment. I love the behind the scenes stuff and working up front with customers. I'm not totally sure pharmacy would be the thing for me, but I'm wanting to investigate this path so I'll need to get some pharmacy exposure other than me picking up my prescriptions, etc. Frankly, I just think working in a pharmacy would be pretty cool although I think the old MD/DO thing is still cool too. There's a definite quandry there.

I know this has been lengthy, and I'm jumping around all over the place. I'm just curious what your opinions on my bio is should I elect to pursue further research into pharmacy as a career choice.

First, I would recommend doing some shadowing (preferably with a preceptor) so you can pick up on the kinds of stuff that goes on everyday. There's a very good chance that the pharmacist has gone to UAMS and can tell you much about it.

If you like teaching, then you can try to get a position in a pharmacy practice department at a pharmacy school while working as a retail, hospital, or clinical pharmacist. It's one thing that I'm looking into, because I like working with students from being a math tutor and gen chem TA.

Kudos to you for being genuinely interested - you'd be surprised how many people in pharmacy school don't truly love it; why not give it a shot?

So is the background, grades, etc, ok?

I mean my grades were decent at graduation with that 3.42 or 5 or whatever it was, but my dance with accounting brought it down to 3.2 I think. I'd have to go pull up the old transcript. At the time, like I kind of hinted, I lost all interest in it and could have cared less what my grades were. Classes were cheap there so I wasn't out much.

Well, ok, nevermind. I don't know why I was asking since I've been going on with every intention of going to medical school and not giving a rat's tail about what anybody thought of that spout of lowered grades.

As long as it's above 3.3-3.4, you should be ok.

Have you taken the PCAT yet?

Oh, no way. Like I said, I haven't had o-chem yet or physics for that matter.

I'm thinking about taking those classes at Henderson since I like the area around there, plus it's about an hour from where I'm stationed. You know anybody in your program that did undergrad there? I was an SAU grad.

I know C. Hayes and B. England, but not very well. There's one more person in my class from SAU, but I don't know who it is. According to class statistics, there are 3 from SAU.

There are other pharmacy schools in Arkansas contrary to popular belief here in Arkansas. Don't forget about Harding! Come up and visit the school.

You sound very similar to myself in that you are a former teacher. One thing I wanted to point out is you will need to check with pharmacy schools to see if any of the classes you have already taken will still be accepted. I graduated from college in 1998 and I had to retake some classes because they were taken 7 + years ago. Good luck in your pursuits!

Yeah, I was just reading about them. Maybe I'll do that. Thanks.

Ah, well that blows. Fortunately, it was the easy ones that I took that long ago. 😀 Good GPA booster there. 👍
