i have looked at many different books on tooth morphology and have found a bewildering array of answers to the following question. Can anyone please please help...
Comparing the mandibular versus the maxillary canines - which marginal ridge/slope is greater on each canine?
Putting that another way: does the max canine have its greatest slope distally or mesially? and does the mandibular canine have its greatest slope/marginal ridge mesially or distally?

someone please help? 😕 😕

Distal marginal ridge is greater than mesial marginal ridge for both max. and mand. canines.
 
hey paceman - thanks for the reply. if the DMR is greater in both canines, then how do they occlude in ICP in a class 1 relationship? i guess this is what is throwing me off..

I would have to oppose Pacemans statement.
Based on my sources, the DMR on the mandibular canine is GREATER than the MMR.
On the maxillary canine, the MMR is GREATER than the DMR.

Are you looking at mesial marginal ridge or mesial cusp ridge? 🙂
 
Mandibular Permanent Canine

The mesial cusp ridge is much shorter than the distal cusp ridge.

Mesial contact in incisal third & Distal contact in middle third


Maxillary Permanent Canine

The distal cusp ridge is longer than the mesial cusp ridge.

The mesial contact point is at the junction of the incisal and middle third. Distally, the contact is situated more cervically. It is at the middle of the middle third.

The distal slope is longer than the mesial slope on both of them.Period. Thats what my sources say.
As for their occlusal relnship in ICP, the mesial of the max. canine meets the distal of the mand. canine.
The mesial slope of the PRIMARY max. canine is longer than the distal, maybe thats what is confusing you.

Calalily... I am talking about the cuspal ridges not marginal ridges. Marginal ridges are seen on the lingual surface. Cuspal ridges are seen on the incisal surface. I don't think there is any relationship between mesial and distal marginal ridges and occlusion. What I was talking about was the cuspal ridges.
