Hi, so i know this question has been asked like millions and millions of times but seriously i'm really confused here and cannot decide on my major. My advisor here at the university I attend do not help either. they basically suck and its just not my opinion. anyways i'm a junior and i realllllyy want to pursue my studies in medical schools, i'm doing all the right thing to get my chances higher and i'm done with all my science pre-req but don't know what to major in! I orginally came in as a biology major like most people thinking this is what I have to do in order to go to med school... kinda late but with student associations and all I realized u can major in anything u want and it actually gives u a well-rounded appearance as the med schoool want. i've heard so many traditional arguments for people to choose between sicence or non-science major but I just can't decide!! Should i stay a biology major or become a non-science major like psychology?? My science gpa is not bad but kinda low like around 3.20 my overall gpa is so far around this area too..

1. Should I stay a biology major and imporve my science gpa for a better chance of being accepted? or would being a bio major make me "blend" in and not give a high chance of acceptance?

2. if i go with psych would it be considered too easy of a load and put offf the med schools?

3. i know for sure that if I do psychology my overall gpa would really increase but if I take biology im not sure if I would be able to increase my overall gpa as high as psychology? should i even consider this in my decision process

😕😕😕

currently i can go both ways, if i had a chance to redo my two years i would prbly go with engineering or biochem but its too late so at this point I can easily choose between psych or bio.. but don't know which one...so if anyone can really give some advice or their opinions it WOULD really help alott!! (i've been doing that alot for the past year) I"M going CRAZY HERE :scared:

1) Pick whatever major you want, it has no impact on your competitiveness
2) Beef up your science GPA if necessary, whether it be through major requirements or simply electives.

I literally looked at the list of programs offered and said "well that one looks like the most interesting."

Ended up doing Neuroscience, and wouldn't have wanted to do anything else.

1) It would help to raise your science GPA, but you won't be at a disadvantage in the application process being a biology major.

2) Schools will not consider a psych major "too easy" and discriminate against your application. Many schools even specifically state that they do not take major into account.

3) If you don't know if you can increase your overall GPA as much in biology as you can in psychology, how do you know you can significantly raise your science GPA with a biology major? All else the same (i.e. you're equally interested in the subjects) I would say between the two you should go with a psychology major to help your overall GPA and take additional science classes on the side to help your science GPA.

Major in something which you enjoy and at which you will do well in your courses. You need to get your gpa up, and taking classes you enjoy will make this much easier to do. If you like psych, major in it. If you like philosophy, major in it. If you like math...

Echoing what other people said, take what you find most interesting since otherwise class tends to be miserable.

Beyond that, most non-science majors can be presented as a positive for med school (especially psychology). Understanding human behavior and tendencies is essential considering that you spend all your time dealing with people. It shouldn't be too hard to draw connections between the classes you take and how they could benefit medical practice.

The GPA questions is really up to you. A higher science gpa is always useful, but if you are concerned you can always take extra science classes alongside the psych major or during the summer. Alternately, if you focus on abnormal or cognitive psychology many of those classes can have heavy bio/chem components. Again, point this out on your applications and the lack of extra science courses is less important.

Your major is not that important, this is true. However, you want to think deeply about what you major in. Ask yourself if you have the ability to major in it and still pull great grades while maintaining all A's in your pre-med prerequisites.

The common misconception though, is that your major isn't looked at. Let me give you an example:

You are and admissions officer. Two students come with the same GPA, MCAT, EC's, LORs, personal statements. But one is a Biology major and the other is a Psychology major. Who are you going to pick, knowing you should pick someone that will better chance of succeeding in medical school. You are going to pick the bio major who has taken courses like Biochem, embryology, immunology, etc.

So, what I'm trying to say is to just be as competitive as you can. Med schools may not care about your major but they will look at the classes you took. They like to see a lot of science classes rather than someone who just took the prereqs. It shows more dedication and interest in medicine, IMO.

FYI: If you really love psych, major in it. If it's just because it will be an easy GPA boost, do yourself a favor and "prepare yourself" because you will get a pretty good wake up call in med school if you don't.

Biophysics, that's where the cool kids that are not awesome enough for engineering are.

To the OP: do whatever you love. Be weary of engineering majors as they can be GPA killers at most schools. They do, however, make an awesome backup plan (job market/salary-wise).

I used to agonize over my major, too, when I was deciding between Biochemistry and General Science (I didn't take P-chem.)

Then I realized that it's one line on your entire application. Every piece of information I've been given suggests that schools don't care about your major in the slightest.

ETA: Unless you got a BA in Impoverished Baby Slaying with a minor in Pillaging or something.

Considering you are a junior aren't there only a handful of majors you can still pick from unless you want to spend an extra year or 2 in undergrad?

Psychology is an awesome premed major because so much of the content is relevant throughout medical school, residency, and practice. Maybe you can major in one and minor in the other? At min, I would take intro, abnormal, biological, and developmental psychology. Personally, I would major in psych over bio if it would get me out of a bunch of plant and ecology classes.

I agree, ultimately pick the major that INTERESTS you most, but also realize that being a science major makes the mcats somewhat easier to study for. Simple truth.

pick a major which u think u can pursue as profession/career if you decide against med school..or even worse..if u can't make it at all..or concerned abt debt etc.etc.etc..whatever the reason is...

I would take whatever you're gonna be able to maximize your GPA in and take bio classes on the side.

Your GPA should be your main concern as well as the MCAT.. your major doesn't play much role as long as your have the core biology requirements.

I have a friend of mine that was accepted to med school with a major in Music but, he took the core science class as electives
