Hey all,

First time poster, long time lurker here. I'm an M1 and I'm trying to solidfy my summer plans. Here is the situation I'm in....I've applied to a few summer research programs (Sloan Kettering being my top choice) and independently to a few key PIs. I recently got an offer from a PI who incidentally is President of a speciality society (on the order of the American Heart Association, American Gastroenterological Association, etc...I won't divulge the specific society to protect my PI's identity) and an editor a several recognized journals. Before getting this offer, however, the Sloan Kettering was my first choice (it pays more and it's a pretty well known program). The Sloan Kettering decisions haven't been made yet (apps not even due) but I have a prime contact in the program who I've kept in contact with and he virtually ensured my selection (I know this seems unfair, but I didn't do anything except heavily express my interest, and I have a solid research background). Anyway, I have to choose between these two options and I'm not really sure where I should lean. I'm interested in both fields and the location is the same (NYC) so that isn't a factor. I'm not too concerned about the money. Is the Sloan-Kettering program *that* good that it will help in the future with residency, etc? The PI for the speciality society is very famous in his field, but is it still better to go with a established "program" rather than with an individual PI. I should be able to get a publication/presentation out of both programs so in that sense, that factor is equal. Any help? I'm looking to do cardiology eventually and neither of these research positions are in cardiolgoy (they are in a different internal medicine speciality). Any advice would be awesome.

Much thanks...

Sounds to me like both options would be similarly helpful. Neither is in cardiology, both could lead to publications, both could lead to a nice reference, both are in the same location. That translates to a wash to me. Bear in mind that there will be other points at which you can still take off time to do more substantial research if you feel it's needed for a particular level of competitive specialty. Enjoy your summer. Congrats.

See if you can talk to people who are in the PI's lab or have done the Sloan-Kettering thing before.

thanks for the suggestion...ill try to find people who have done the sloan kettering thing...
