Hey Guys,

I'm a 3rd year McGill student majoring in Anatomy. I have a pretty low GPA right now due to laziness and just improper study habits. But I'm improving and trying to make up for it now. I currently have a 3.1 ish GPA with a year left of my degree still. Scored a 24 on the mcat because halfway through studying for it, found out that as of 2011 Montreal does not require MCAT.

My dilemma is, I don't know whether or not I should do another undegraduate degree starting next fall to try and boost my marks up to maybe a 3.4-3.5, which might get me into the French universities here and maybe McGill. But it'll be 2 more years spent in undergrad.

Or, if I should apply to the Big 4 Caribbean schools and get it done with, but the whole matching for residency spots worries me. I've even considered schools in Hungary, because I've "heard" that finding residency from those schools can be easier than from the caribbean.

I have time to decide, but it still is always on my mind. Just wanted to know what you guys think are pros and cons to just going to a Carrib school..

Pro:
get your MD

Con:
-isolated on an island with probably nothing much to do, imo. I was on dominica once - not a place I'd ever want to live for 2 years.
-FMGs have lower first-time pass rates for step 1, don't know the numbers tho. probably something to consider if you say you have a history of laziness/improper study habits. It might reflect the level of teaching there, which would mean more work required on your part to make sure you pass.
-many residency programs frown upon FMGs, especially upper tier specialities and upper tier institutions, regardless of specialty
-some residency programs close their doors to FMGs - don't accept applications from them.

I'm not Canadian, but I would think Canadian grads don't have too hard a time matching US residencies... maybe not as easy as US MD grads, but not as hard as caribbean grads but someone else could probably better address that.

basically the step 1 passing rate and residency matching issue are the biggies. others might have more reasons, but those are the major ones.

In the words of Bannie from Canadialand, you're only choice is Carib. Boost your gpa and get a better gpa and try to get into SGU.
