😡 I work full time and have two days a week for classes. I have looked for a year for an academic art class (ANY art class!) I can attend at night or on a weekend for one day, but there is nothing that fits in my schedule. Last semester, my courseload was too full, and this semester, it's Kaplan! (I go to school Friday and Saturday for other courses).

So, it really angers me that I will not be able to fit in an art class to formally "demonstrate" my manual dexterity like they want until AFTER I submit my AADSAS in May. I will only have my non-academic manual dexerity stuff like work (dental assistant), hobbies (guitar, sewing, drawing, etc) to show manual dexterity stuff. But will they even consider that? I mean, to me a transcript with an art class says a lot--- but can't anyone list hobbies they think make their manual dext. skills look good and just lie/exaggerate? How will they know I am being honest? I really do like those things, and I just can't physically find the time for a friggin' art class before the application will be submitted! Anyone else in the same boat?

PS. I found ONE drafting class at a CC nearby that is 6 hours on Saturdays. It starts two weeks before I take the DAT. I think it would be a bad idea to take this because even post-DAT, Saturdays are good for shadowing. But, proving manual dexterity is so important! I don't want to sabotage my chances. Any ways around this conundrum??

All those things you do on your spare time will work fine. You don't have to "officially" enroll in any class to prove you are good with your hands. Yes people can lie and say they are a concert pianist even though they aren't. But honesty is the best policy.

i didnt take any art classes and i even left the manual dexerity section of the application blank. i was never even asked about it in my interviews. from what ive heard, admissions committees dont care so much about manual dexterity (at least in the US) because it is mastered during dental school. you refine those skills during school. i think dental assisting and your hobbies are plenty. dont go out of your way for an art class because dental assisting shows way more to the admissions committee than an art class.

Although an art class or music class will make your application seem more credible, it is not necessary to 'prove' you have manual dexterity.

Watercoloring isn't the same as making a temporary acrylic

IF you are worried about being credible with your non academic manual skills, then bring pictures to your interviews or even send picture proof to each school and have them put it with your file.

Have your letter of recommendation writers say something about your hobbies. THEY make your application credible too...there is a less chance of them lying about your application...get it?

There are other ways around taking a 1 credit pisant art class to show your hand skillz

I agree with pick me. In one of my interviews (group interview) one girl was going off about how good she was at handball. The interviewer basically told her it didn't mean anything and doing dental work is way different than anything else we have done with our hands, and you will learn it in dental school.
