CAP fellowship

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The UPMC program typically takes most of their child fellows from their own general psychiatry residency. I think last year all 8 spots were taken by their own residents and they did not interview outside candidates. So just contact the current program director to see what the situation is like for this year and if they are taking applications for 2010-11.

Thank you guys ... I appreciate your input !!
Any idea about UC Denver child psych program ?
Does child programs have lot of overnight calls ?

Wait... what? C/A have call? You've got to be kidding! This will be a first... I thought the job fell on the common folk in the trenches with the pager going off every 5 minutes being told "I just need to tell you about this person real quick!"

NRMP opens today !!
Anyone else on SDN applying for CAP fellowship this year ? When does the programs start sending interview invitations ?

Hey,
I am also a current applicant for child psychiatry. I have started to hear from programs. It depends on when your application is complete and ready for review. It can take up to 2-3 weeks for you to hear anything. Make sure to follow up with the program coordinators to show interest and to make sure you are not missing anything. 😀

Thanks for replying. i have also started hearing from some of the programs. I didnt hear anything from northeast area ? Any ideas about UC Denver ?

I am also applying to child psychiatry programs. The only places I have heard back from so far are a couple in California, my home program and one program in the New England area on the East Coast. I am sure they are still sorting through all the applications and we should hear from more places in the next few weeks!

It is really early to be hearing from programs. I know our program has barely started going through applications. Except for a few programs, Child is still relatively non-competitive and you guys will be fine.

Good luck! :luck:

I'm applying for a CAP fellowship this year too! Its great to have a thread to compare notes, experiences etc. I've applied to 5 programs and I've heard back from two (even before the NRMP opened). I'm hoping to get at least another 2 invites. I emailed all the programs with my NRMP code but a week's gone by without any more invites (sigh). I take comfort that its early days still. On another note, how many programs is everyone applying to?

Hey Minniemo

I applied to a total of 12 programs, but mostly because I want to come back to California/west coast. I am tired of the winters and digging my car out of snow. I have heard from 6 programs (four in California, one in Arizona and my home program), so that is good. Still waiting to hear from two more California programs. 👍

Good luck to everyone!!

Thanks sciencemind. I'm pleased to say I got another 2 invites yesterday!

It's really great to see some child people on this forum! As far as I know, I'm one of the very few child fellows (the only one?) that frequents this site. So it will be nice to have more of us around.

It would also be nice to know which attendings are child trained.

As we post so infrequently, maybe the moderators can give us our own sticky?

Good luck with the process everyone! Child is awesome and I'm extremely happy in the fellowship. 🙂

Maranatha, I've been a lurker and I keep my eye out for posts about CAP but there's not too many. Can I ask what the interviews are like? Any advice on how to prepare for the interviews? Mine start in a couple of weeks and I'm getting a bit nervy. If anyone else has already had interviews, I'd love to hear your impressions. TIA!

I only interviewed at one place (my home institution), so I may not be the best one to ask. 😳 However, I'm not sure why most places would be any different then interviews from general residency with standard questions geared toward child psych such as "Why child psychiatry", "Where do you see yourself in 10 years", etc.

You made it into general residency and have a lot of experience interacting with people, so I'm sure you'll do just fine. Also, remember that besides a few places, it really isn't that competitive so most places are going to try to recruit you.

That's impressive! Makes me feel a little better (hopeful) about my measly 5 applications. I've applied to a mixture of competitive and not-so-competitive programs. Looks like I'll be ok at the latter but I'm curious to know what interviews at the former are going to be like...

On another note, is razberryswirl around. IIRC she was going into CAP.
