Hello all,

This question is directed to the current/former NYC dental students/residents. I will be doing a GPR up there next year and I only "plan" on being in NY for the one year and I am considering taking my car. What are your opinions/experiences with that. Thanks!!

car in NY?? avoid if possible is my suggestion. I was up there for a summer and would never have wanted a car there.

depends where you are going to be exactly. if you're going to be in manhattan i'd try and avoid having a car here.

I'll be working in Harlem and also plan on living there. When I was up there the traffic didn't seem as bad as in Midtown or Downtown. I was for the longest time saying I wasn't going to take it, but one of my med school colleagues that is from NYC (Manhattan) was really like no you need your car and I was wanting to get some more input to consider.

Hm. I'm not sure about that area. I automatically assumed a part of NYC. My bad

I've heard many people do not bring their cars when they stay in NYC.

Actually, I'd rather want to hear about the way one can keep his/her car in NYC. (Btw, I am not bringing my car!)

Any know-hows?

Are there many garages? How much is it per month? 🙂

It depends. I lived in NY for years and never had a problem with the car. Sometimes it could be a bit of a pain switching sides for street cleaning and such, but if you use it on occasion, not so bad.

Garages are pricey. Ones in buildings are horrible. One tip: if you ever use a parking garage, ALWAYS keep the receipt for at least a year. The reason is I've personally see garages overfill, and then start parking on streets or on sidewalks. Metermaids or cops come around and ticket every car. Then the employees simply remove the tickets. The person then gets a ticket with a penalty on it that's bigger than the initial fine.

If you can manage it, leave your car in Queens or LI, but be aware that you might still need to move it for street sweeping in the former.

Personally, I don't feel one needs a car if they are within NYC, as public transit is excellent, and one can bike anywhere. I still don't find parking the problem, but the moving to be a pita sometimes.

You won't need a car if you only plan on traveling around NYC. Otherwise, it might be convenient to have...

Within the city public transportation is pretty good. Getting out of the city there are buses to boston, hartford, philly, DC... etc... And getting a garage can be expensive depending where you are. My friend parks in midtown for $300/mo -- I don't know what the prices would be further uptown. Another option would be to park outside the city (this friend parked in White Plains for awhile). You won't need the car for daily home => work commutting though.

If you are NYC; no car is necessary- you can always rent for the day and not have to worry about parking.
If you are Westchester, LI or anywhere else; you need a car..
