I will be moving from Michigan to Illinois for internship. My registration is due to expire soon in May, but I won't move until early June.
1) Will I have to pay registration in both states, or can I just get by with one registration in Michigan.
2) Also, how would the car insurance work? I can see getting by with a Michigan coverage for now since my policy is up on June 1, but what will happen in 6 months if I still have a Michigan registration?
3) Last question, what is cheaper Michigan or Illinois for registration and insurance?
Thanks.

You can only register your car in 1 state. Most states require that you change your license and registration when you move within a certain period of time. However, it appears that IL does not require you to get an IL license if you do not plan on becoming a permanent resident there (see: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/drivers/drivers_license/dlfaq.html) so you can still use your Michigan license if you prefer, it would appear. Check the same site for info about car registration.

Check with your insurance company. If your car is garaged in another state, it may change your rates and they may or may not require registration in the other state. The site above has info about insurnace; as long as you have a policy that is effective in Illinois, you should not have to change companies.

Check with your insurance company and license bureaus. It will also depend on where you live...insurance will likely be higher in Chicago than it would be in Beulah, Michigan.
