why not save yourself the money and back it up yourself or am I missing something?

Over the years, I've accumulated Gig's of stuff on the hard drive....family photos, other media momentoes.....business related files.....mounds of e-mail that I need to save both for legal and non-legal reasons.

Incrementally backing up the stuff myself is a pain in the as.

Carbonite seems really easy....ie I have to do nothing at all...it just does it in the back ground.....Gig's of stuff stored away off site...for immediate retrieval at any moment.....

It can back up your entire hard drive if you want.

I was just wondering if anyone else had been using it...and if there are any problems that I haven't run into yet.

moderator....bump this thread it has nothing to do with anesthesia!

If that was the issue, just buy an external HD and set it to backup every week or so at like 2am when you're asleep.

Totally.

1TB for $175. More storage space than you'll know what to do with.

I understand the appeal of having your data stored offsite. But realistically, fires and floods are pretty rare (pretty much the only reasons to have backup off site) and you'll end up paying a premium. However if piece of mind it worth it, it's hard to argue against a service like that.

Actually, I considered online data storage but how can you ever really be sure things are secure from prying eyes? I just went out and bought an external hard drive with a ton of memory. They aren't that expensive and can easily accommodate your 500GB adult film library Mil.

And apma...this forum reflects that anesthesiology is one of the few medical specialties where the doctors actually have interesting personalities and whose life isn't defined by their job. I suggest you either get a life or get laid and check out the IM forum if you're looking for the straight laced medical drones.

Have a wonderful day!

The cheapest option is generally to buy the harddrive and external enclosure separately (really very easy to install the HDD into the enclosure).

Pardon my ignorance, but wouldn't an online backup system be exposed to more security threats than, say, a hard drive. The convenience factor is nice, but with all the breaches (especially being non-apple) that are going on, my comfort level with something like this would be low.

My stuff's not top secret.

If some drone wants to peek at pictures of my kids doing somersaults into the pool...that's ok.

I installed the trial version on my wife's computer, and it's pretty cool......instead of plug and play......it's pay and forget.

for 175...you get 3 years plus of subscription...and in 3 years..technology can change...hard drives can fail...I've had it happen.

Just wonder what you all thought.

The issue that I have with these services is how do you know that the company is even going to be around in 3 years. Look at the failure rate of new internet companies. Then you have the problem that your data is now in the hands of a defunct company. No real way to get it back. Worst case scenario is that the bankruptcy court sells the assets and your files go out on the open market. While you hopefully don't have any compromising information there, you would be amazed by how much personal information accumulates on a computer.

For my money the best investment is one of the network harddrives with backup software. If you want more redundancy personally I like the Buffalo Terrastation in raid 1. Anything really important should be in someplace relatively indestructible like a safe deposit box. I back up all my important work to DVD once every three months and put it in a safe deposit box. Probably overkill but who knows.

Mil, not sure if you're on a PC or Mac. If you're on a mac, and you have OS X 10.5, it comes with a program called "time capsule" which will automatically back up your computer hard drive to some other volume you designate. It will do it in such a way as well, that you can go back and see what you had on any given date in the past, not just the most recent backup. Essentially it makes one massive backup, then updates any changes that occur, and allows you to go back in time through those changes and retrieve whatever you might have lost, or want an earlier version of. It's kind of hard to explain. Pretty sweet technology though.

Correction, it is called "Time Machine" which as you say, is REALLY cool and an easy back up system. Time Capsule is the Terabit wireless drive you buy from Apple and it can back up all the computers in the house wirelessly - another really cool thing.

There apparently are some issues with time capsule / time machine, such as wireless slowdowns, backups that lead nowhere, and BLAH BLAH BLAH. I did my initial backup with a direct connection after the wireless attempt failed twice and now I have no problems at all.

Decent product. Cool concept.
