Anybody has any idea where is the highest frequency of carcinoid? In one question I've seen the bronchus. However each body system usually discusses them individually, and for GI it is supposed to be the appendix, while some references were referring to the small bowel... Hard to figure out where is the highest occurence overall.

Thanks

most common malignancy of appendix is carcinoid i believe. and most frequent site of carcinoid is small bowel

i think.... 😛

This brings up a question I have...isn't the appendix part of the small bowel?

I just looked this up. The source I used says that the appendix is connected to the caecum, and the caecum is part of the colon so I would say the appendix is a part of the colon and not the small bowel.

There's some confusion, so I googled it finally... It seems that the majority of carcinoids arise in the appendix and to a lesser extent in the small bowel, stomach, and duodenum.
http://www.medifocus.com/guide_detail.asp?gid=GS019&a=a&assoc=Google&keyword=carcinoidtumors explains "Carcinoid tumors are generally quite rare. Although the majority of patients do not have symptoms associated with the tumor, when flushing and diarrhea occurs, the patient is said to have Carcinoid Syndrome. It is estimated that approximately 10% of patients with carcinoid tumors will develop the syndrome. The overall incidence of carcinoid tumors is approximately 2.0 to 2.5 per 100,000 population. The most common site for men is the small intestine whereas in women it is the appendix. A positive family history is an important risk factor of carcinoid tumors and there is an association with the development of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1 (MEN-1). The majority of patients with NET's present in the fifth decade of life. "

According to Goljan the tip of the appendix is the most common overall site of carcinoid tumor, while the small intestine is its most common primary site to metastasize to the liver. 🙂

The appendix is actually a part of the right middle lobe of the lung (analagous to the lingula); it just migrates during embryogenesis.
