in terms of giving someone the best position to get good research opportunity and opening doors for faculty at academic centers, which programs in texas is good for cards

Are you talking about IM residency programs, or cardiology fellowships?
UT Southwestern is generally considered to be the top academic cardiology program down there, from what I have been told during my career. They also apparently do a lot of bench research/basic research and a lot of the faculty are well-connected. They apparently also are known to work their IM residents very hard...but that is kind of standard at a lot of high powered academic IM residencies. They do a lot of ICU months apparently...again, pretty standard, although they may do more than residents even at some of the other similar highpowered academic places.

I would consider Baylor in Houston probably the #2 place, but they've had some upheavals at their medical center lately.

As far as fellowship programs in cardiology, I would again say that UT Southwestern is probably the top one, which would be hardest to get into as well. After that it's probably Texas Heart Institute if you want to do interventional cardiology, versus perhaps Baylor if you want to do more bench research (not sure about those last 2, and how they'd rank, honestly...).
