Hi!
I'm starting medical school in a few weeks 🙂 I was thinking about what I'm interested in and cardiology/cardio-thoracic surgery seemed pretty interesting. Can someone help me figure out what I should do to explore these fields to see if they are a right match for me (apart from attending a few surgeries). Also, what are the usual steps that are taken to become a cardio surgeon -- residency, etc.
Thanks!
C.S.

Cardiothoracic Surgery is a fellowship that is done after five clinical years of General Surgery residency. CT fellowships are two years in length and fellows are selected on the basis of their performance (in-training exams and clinical performance) in General Surgery Residency.

Cardiology is a fellowship that is done after three clinical years in Internal Medicine. Cardiology fellowships are two - three years in length depending on the components of the fellowships. Cardiology fellows are chosen based on performance in Internal Medicine residency (in-training exams and clinical performance).

Your best source of information for either surgery or medicine is to join the speciality interest groups when you start medical school. These groups can provide you with exposure and most importantly, the academic requirements that you must meet in order to match in either Internal Medicine or General Surgery.
