What are your career plans post-graduate from an MD/PhD program and why?

1) Physician-scientist (some combo of medicine/research)
2) 100% Clinician (either academic, group practice or private practice)
3) 100% Scientist (academic, industry, government, etc)
4) Other (consulting, business, etc...)

two weeks into third year med school and i think my ideal career is becoming more clear to me. it would just be WONDERFUL if i had a specialty clinic and can see interesting cases and help these people, while have a research program on the side. I'll do whatever I can to make sure this comes true.

oic, your poll makes it seem like other is really plans for other careers not covered by the other options. I am just undecided. I think that no matter what plans you have by the time you graduate your MD/PhD, they are liable (likely?) to change in the 5-7 years of residency and fellowship. This is even more true for those not done their MD/PhD program.

Why am I undecided since you asked? Well, I'm not sure that the cost of the academic research life is worth the rewards (what rewards?), but I've always been strongly interested in a research career.

is this poll supposed to reveal anything? In the physician scientist forum, everyone wants to be a physician scientist.

I've sincerely thought of opening a coffee house. the problem with endeavors like this is that they cost $$ that i don't have. I guess I'll keep my day job. 🙂
