Hello, I want to know which would be better in terms of getting a residency, fellowship, etc. and practicing in the US: The University of the West Indies vs an Irish med school (like RCSI) vs a UK med school (such as Imperial)? Assuming the person does not hold a green card/US passport.

N.B.- The Caribbean med school I am talking about is the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, Jamaica; not SGU, Ross, AUC, SABA, etc.

Tough to say. A difficult road either way.

Hello again. I know this post was made some time ago but I was wondering (hoping) that there would be more people here, able to answer this question now. Also, how feasible do you think it would be to try and get a spot in an American medical school (w/o permanent residency) coming from an American undergrad?

I ask this, because I am now thinking of throwing that option into the mix but I read the statistics on http://www.naahp.org/Default.aspx?tabid=2559 and they look quite impossible to say the least. So right now I really don't know what to do. It would seem as if going to a reputed university in the UK would seem best, but I really need some advice on this. What do you suggest, and why?

Also, I aspire to attain a general surgery residency, so taking that into consideration, what is the best option, as I must do a surgery residency in the United States to be board certified (hence, doing residency in another country is kind of out of the question)?

I would suggest the irish or the uk medical school. Imperial is a very well regarded university. it is ranked in the top 10 of the world. You will get a better education there although in the uk you will have to prepare for the USMLE mostly by yourself. Many students in RCSI and UWI will be applying back to the U.S/Canada whereas in Imperial most won't.
