Carilion clinic program?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Cool! I rotated at Carilion in Peds as a third year UVA student before the vatech program started. Glad to see they got a Derm program going.

I don't think it's too risky. It could be a little extra work, but that also means more learning.

No. Every derm program across the country will lead to a board certification in Derm. If you don't like it on interview day, then rank it last.

i saw that that program requires you to have step 2 CK AND CS scores by the time you apply, so i decided to leave it off my list as i haven't taken cs yet.. which i thought was an odd requirement

Not all programs stick as tightly to those requirements. It also says:
Three letters of recommendation:
One from the residency program director of internship/PGY1 training
Two from physicians preferably in the field of Dermatology

So it seems to be for people in internship now.

Yah I'm guessing they're interviewing for residents to start in 2015 and 2016 this year. So in 2016, they'll have a complete program.

Hi, can anyone please comment on this program?

Of course I want to get in any derm program...but is it too risky to match at a new program, with only 3 faculty on board?

That program is definitely legit and seems like a great place to train! The chair is a really intelligent and nice guy that used to be the chair at UCLA Harbor many years ago, while I was interviewing. The medical dermatologist/Dermatopathologist on staff went to Mayo Clinic and is well-respected, well-published for his stage of career. The Mohs surgeon is well trained and experienced (and pretty easy on the eyes, lol).

Yes, she is: http://www.carilionclinic.org/providers/mariana-phillips-md 😀

I won't comment on the physical appearance of Mariana Phillips, but she seems a competent, if conservative, Mohs surgeon with a good lineage from Algin Garrett at VCU. Dr. Kolodny has a solid reputation and it was a huge loss for Harbor when he left. I don't know enough about Dr. Chavan to comment. Roanoke is a beautiful area, if a bit remote. Apparently they're having a bit of trouble getting consults at this early stage in the game, but I'm sure that will change as the program gets more word-of-mouth among the other services. The current resident is a former Ortho resident, if I'm not mistaken, and a really nice guy, from what I understand. New programs are always a big risk, but this one seems to have a lot going for it.

Whenever derm programs start, it's hard getting inpatient consults at the beginning esp. when other services have done it on their own without consulting. It just needs other departments getting used to and realizing that they have a derm dept. that they can consult.

Can anyone shed light on the Carrilion invite that went out today...was it for 2015 or 2016 or both years?

If you got the invite does it matter? If you're an MS-4, you're only eligible for one. If you're an intern or finished internship, then you'll probably be considered for both.

I did not apply for both so I want out find out if it was for 2015 or 2016 or both.

If you're an intern or in research fellowship right now, you'll be eligible, and likely interviewing for both automatically.

If you're an MS-4, then you're interviewing for the one that starts in 2016.

If dermal is a fourth year, I'm guessing they want to know if only 2015 invite went out so they can still hold on to hope that they can get a 2016 invite?
YES!!!
