carpet in operatory

My new dentist has carpet in the operatories while my old dentist had tile. I would think tile would be easier to keep clean and disinfected, or is the amount of "stuff" on the floor negligible? What is your opinion about carpet in the operatory?

I would think carpet would be a pain in the ass to clean all the time. It's so easy to spill things on the floor. Cleaning dried up bits of alginate would suck.

That cant be sanitary. Arent your ops considered a surgical area?

on the other hand, i bet the carpet really dampens that loud ass noise when you drop an instrument.

my dentist has carpet. i don't see anything wrong with it. if he drops something then he doesn't use it all the same. i think it makes everything look nicer... except for the fact that it's an ugly brown 😀

i feel that carpet gives a more "comfy" feel and might help create a warmer environment for anxious patients. plus it soaks stuff up so people don't accidentally slip in a puddle of water or something. if you get a darker color and get it cleaned once a month or something it should stay pretty clean.

Tile, hardwood or linoleum are the only thing I'd consider (and have) in my ops. Way easier to clean a non "woven" surface and way easier to slide around in your dentist chair 😀 The way my office is set up is tile in the entry foyer/reception desk area, carpet from the entry foyer to the ops, and then depending on the operatory either hardwood or linoleum in the ops. Of course we have linoleum in the staff Kitchen since my office staff loves to drop popcorn all over the floor 😀

The first time you have a patient in the winter (if you practice in a cold weather climate) come into your office on a snowy day with snow/sand covered boots, and then have them melt/drip all over your flooring/chairs, you'll see the benefits of easy clean surfaces, since even though you have a cleaning service taking care of the office on a regular basis, they're not in the office every day, and you'll want to maintain a clean appearance.

the tile floor in my apartment looks dirty a lot faster than the carpeted area, just because you can see every little thing on the tiles. 4 out of the 5 dental offices I have shadowed at all had short, industrial carpeting so it can't be that awful. I'm sure any workplace-grade flooring will do depending on your preferences 🙂

actually a dentist friend of mine got carpet and hated it. he made places in it everywhere with the wheels on his chair.

he had it taken up and eventhough it was cleaned weekly it was full of dust and funk.

Another way to look at it, just think, when your high speeds are running, does ALL the water coolant spray end up either up the high volume suction or in the patients mouth?? Does a freshly extracted, bloody tooth ever inadvertantly get dropped on the floor, does a saliva covered temporary crown ever slip out of your hand as your trimming it and hit the floor??

Now what's easier to keep "clean" (obviously clean is a relative term), carpet or tile/hardwood/linoleum??

tile is definitly actually cleaner, but carpet looks cleaner without having to wipe it up after every few patients.

As biogirl said, when I'm thinking of carpet I'm thinking of VERY short, industrial carpeting. It appears cleaner and looks nicer than tile and EVERY office I've ever been in... which is probably around 10 specialists and gp's have had this type of flooring.
