I've seen that applicants have already gotten interviews and rejections from Case Western the past few weeks. I got a letter in the mail yesterday from Case saying my application will be placed on "Hold" status until they receive scores of a re-take on the DAT. They said I will be advised as soon as the Committee reaches a decision about my application.

They didn't come out and say they want me to retake the DAT. And I don't know why they would. My DAT scores are well above their averages in both AA and PAT. I was wondering if anyone could give me some more information on what this is all about. I haven't seen anyone say they got this response yet this year. I am also going to give them a call on Monday but I am hoping some re-applicants could shed some light on this for me.

I would definitely call them up and get clarification. For some reason, AADSAS could have checked that you were re-taking the DAT.

I got the same letter last year, and I am pretty sure it was for my PAT score.

Well what were your scores overall??

Sorry guys, I have to be honest. A hold at Case is not a good thing. They are waiting to compare you to others, meaning that you may not be good enough, yet.

I don't know of anyone who was accepted after a hold status at Case.

I got the same letter from case. I called in and was told that anyone who does not have a 18 or 19 (I don't remember which) or above on each section of the DAT along with at least a 20 on the RC section will not get an interview. It doesn't even matter how high your GPA is. I was pretty ticked off. I have a 3.84 science GPA, and my DAT scores are as follows : AA-20, TS-21, PAT-22, BIO-19, GC-21, OC-29, RC-18, QR-15-ouch. I know I completely jacked up the QR section which I am still not happy about. I still feel I am a competitive applicant. When I called I was basically told that no matter how high your GPA is and how good your application is, you will not get an interview at Case unless you meet those strict qualifications for DAT scores. The person I talked to supposedly had something to do with the admissions committee. Before they transferred me, I talked with some of the people who work in the admissions office and they told me that my application looked much better than most current students applications looked like when they applied. They told me that the adcom people are pretty much being idiots this year. What it boils down to is they will look at your application again only if you retake the DAT. I am not sure of their cut-off for GPA. Hope this helps.

This definitely isn't entirely true...

False. I have a friend who got a 15 QR and is interviewing Aug 20th at case

I got an 18 RC, 16 QR and my letter said my application was complete and ready for review. I could still get rejected obviously, but my file isn't on hold or anything....

I got an interview invitation at Case with scores lower than 18 in QR. Everything else was 18+. So, I can't believe what was said above.

Well, with all that has been said I guess I will give you all my scores and let you evaluate it a little bit more. It definitely isn't because of my PAT like someone suggested. DAT: AA=19, TS=19, BIO=18, OC=19, GC=20, QR=18, RC=17, PAT=24. GPA: science=3.79, overall 3.84. I do very well with dental experience and volunteer work. We'll see. I applied to a few other schools than case and I wouldn't shed a tear if they rejected me. Just surprised not even an interview is all. I'm calling tomorrow. Thanks for the input skyskier. It'll be interesting if I get the same story from them. I'll let you know what they say.

Case has been known to say these things when asked why they didn't grant an interview.

Last year, one student was rejected with a 17 QR, while another was accepted with the same QR score. It sounds like they will say that just to get rid of you and place the blame on the you, the applicant.

Apparently the person I talked to at Case just fed me a bunch of bull... I was just repeating exactly what I was told when I called the other day.

same thing happen to me. I had 20's on my DAT and they wanted me to re-take it, in a nut shell, they could screw themself, i never even followed up on the application with them

Just got off the phone with the man who signed my "hold" letter. First of all Rozhon, thanks for the input. I am a fan of the "go screw yourself" mindset. So here is what they said. They have done internal studies and concluded higher RC scores correlate to students doing better on boards. He said the adcom wants me to retake it and do no worse than at least 19. This hurt because on 6 practice tests I did no worse than a 20 but test day and the combination of stupid dry erase markers produced a 17. They also said I am able to request the adcom review my application again knowing that I have no intention of retaking the DAT but he said hes never seen that work.

I don't know what I am going to do. I certainly didn't tell them to go screw themselves yet. We'll wait till I get word from a few more schools. I'll wait a month or two before even considering retaking the DAT. For now my file can rot in the "Hold" section of their filing cabinets. And hey, it may be better this way because I don't have to plan and spend money on an interview till I know more about other schools.

To those with a hold...was the hold letter the first or second communication Case had with you? I got an 18 RC. My first letter stated that my application is ready to be reviewed. Will I get a second letter saying that it will be held? Thanks

To students who read all this stuff on SDN, do not believe everything people post from GPA, to DAT, to personal info about experience. You can't attach a name or face to most people so take everything with a grain of salt. Don't lose hope in admission because of what someone says, or believe sure acceptance because of what others says. This info can be useful but don't invest all your effort into deciphiring fact from fiction. The point is everyone on this board only has personal experience or stories they can draw from and this is by no means the final word on anything. Back to this post, I was accepted to Case class of 2011 with an 18 PAT, 18 QR, 22 Readin Comp, 16 Bio, 21 Gen Chem, 21 Organic, 19 total science and 20 academic avg. A 3.5 gpa, and 3.3 science. Some schools where I was expecting acceptance I did not, and others where I never considered were nice enough to offer acceptances. Bottom line, there is no exact science, my stats were avg if not below Case's standards, and at other schools where I was expecting acceptance I did not garner any. There is no way to know what people are looking for, you have your stats, sometimes there is something that draws and eye to your application, just be yourself, try your best, and don't fixate on the numbers game. Best of luck to everyone

I love your advice. Thanks for the encouragement to follow your dream no matter what others say.

Sure, Everything harasser said is true. Nonetheless, I don't lie on this site. I don't see the purpose and if a lot of people do lie I hope justice comes through and doesn't let them into dental school. I got some mail from case before the hold letter. It was just a couple of their standard info packets they send out when they receive your application. This doesn't mean at all you will get a hold letter or an interview letter or a rejection letter. Quite frankly I think I was lucky to get a letter with the hold response rather than a rejection and a couple of things from my app including a really good PAT score may have saved me. If you want to keep playing the speculation/guessing/numbers game a good place to go look is http://www.predents.com/?page=school select case as the school you want to look at and take note of some of the DAT scores of those who got interviews. I enjoy the game and will keep playing myself. Good luck!

K, but with my info packets, a checklist said my application was ready for review..did you get that then a hold?

the sub-18 score thing is definitely false, since I got asked for an interview with GC score of 17, from a DAT that I took in '06.

Lemoncurry, Definately not false! To clarify, they told me they wanted the reading comprehension scores to be 19 and above. I am sure your's was. Thats what all that talk about boards was about. The RC score is special for them. Fifthbeetle, it appears to me that your application still has yet to be reviewed and then you will be getting a response about interview or rejection or the infamous "hold". I never got a checklist but I think it is because I was in the first round of apps they reviewed or maybe it just didn't make it into the envelope. Who knows?

I just got a letter from Case yesterday saying and I quote, "The Committee on Admissions had reviewed your application, and it is the collective decision that your application be placed on "Hold" until we receive your official transcripts reflecting your grades for Fall 2007."
I'm actually surprised that it isn't on hold for DAT score reasons. Here are my specs: AA-18/TS-18/PAT-22/Bio-18/GC-18/OC-19/RC-20/QR-16!! My Quant. is certainly below 18, but they didn't say anything about that. I'm sure my reading score helped a bit.
My AADSAS app. was submitted May 21, mailed to schools June 12, and Case declared my app. complete July 12.
Here's a history of my grades during the past year, in case you're curious...
Winter '06-3.81
Spring '06-3.39
Fall '06-3.77
Winter '07-3.03
Overall GPA-3.43
Science GPA-3.41
So I'm wondering if my somewhat sour ending last semester with a 3.03 raised a red flag? I'm taking summer classes right now and called today to ask if my summer transcript would do instead of Fall (since that would delay my app. until January) and the lady told me that I could send my summer transcript and the committee would look over my app. again and hopefully my grades would be good enough for their liking.
Anyway I just thought I'd add another piece to the "Hold" puzzle of Case admissions.

You gpa is right around the average for enrollees... .07 off? Seriously, you would have to get straight A's and 18 credits to make that change with an existing 120+ credits

That is so bizarre that you would be on hold
