I have an interview next week and I am wondering if there is an essay preceding the actual interviews? If so, how long is it, and can anyone tell me what topic they wrote about?

I'd also say check out the Interview Feedback section, though I'm skeptical of the person who is reporting attending an interview on 10/31/2012.

Congrats on your interview! What day is yours? I have mine on Monday. I've heard from another applicant who interviewed a week ago that there were two essays. Personally (correct me if I'm wrong Dr. Chuck), I think these are to test our ability to write a coherent essay. Mainly to inform the school whether or not we wrote our own personal statement. The individual who told me about the essays said that one of them asked the interviewees how they would redecorate the waiting room.
