Case is definitely the stronger program but that’s a huge price difference that with interest will be a lot. I think based on your pros/cons, Hackensack is the better option. To be fair, I’m from the Midwest so I’m used to cities like Cleveland which isn’t too bad. Still, be where you are happier and when you can save that much money it’s worth it. You’re going to have to work hard at both schools, and I personally wouldn’t go to Case (withdrew my A) b/c I can’t justify having that much debt. Plus having your SO and family close by is so underrated!

Same boat here. Case for 200K more than another (newer) school that is missing a home program for my field of interest, but where I’ll be equally happy. I think 200K+ interest saved is worth the extra effort you would need to put in to pursue a competitive specialty if that interests you. IMO the only way Case might be worth considering in this scenario is if you were interested in a hyper competitive academic program for residency (not sure if you are)… and even then. If you were dead set on primary care, laugh to the bank with Hack. And all this is ignoring the significant personal factors you listed that favor Hack.

Seems like you and your finances would be a lot happier at Hackensack. Not worth the ~240k +interest for CWRU as it stands. Have you notified CWRU of your competing aid offer already? If not, may be worth seeing if they can provide a competitive scholarship.

Yeah, they don't play that game. Need based only with Case. It's the main reason they have so much attrition even though they have such a popular program. But it's their money and this is how they choose to deploy it.

To the extent Case and other schools in their tier are willing to stand by and allow Hackensack to lure away some of their best and brightest, it's only going to help Hackensack build its reputation that much faster, while allowing a few lucky souls to obtain a free US MD that they never thought possible.

Gonna have to echo others and say 400k is an anxiety inducing amount of debt to be in. Yes it’s totally feasible to pay off; but, depending on specialty, it could really sour your future lifestyle and happiness. Since you don’t know what specialties you’re interested in yet, I think you’re better off being in a position that you might have to work a bit harder if you find a passion in something competitive, rather than have to forgo your true interests to chase a higher paying specialty for the sake of future financial security. The Hackensack financial freedom is a big deal. Plus, Hackensack Meridian is a very reputable organization in the NJ/NY area… I won’t be surprised if a lot of their match list is more regional for the first few matches, until they get their feet on the ground. Good thing there’s no shortage of stellar residency programs just on the other side of the Hudson. Networking will be easily accessible. Congrats on your successful cycle and good luck!
