I have the opportunity to do a case report and was just wondering if these reports generate the same amount of praise from residency directors as pure research publications. I don't know whether to divert time away from my research project to write a case report. Any thoughts?

In any field, research is icing on the cake. Board scores are most important. If you got good board scores but no research, you have a higher chance of matching than lets say crappy board scores and a lot of research.

Primary research is definitely valued more highly than case reports. That being said though, if you have time, it all matters of course. Case reports show that you have immersed yourself to some degree in clinical work. Case reports can demonstrate dedication and interest to the clinical side of radiology. But that being said, case reports are not easy to get published!! There are so many cases out there ... if you can get one published, PD's know that it isn't easy and value the publication.
