I'm trying to decide between Case and Cincy and I'm pretty stuck on the decision. I want to eventually work with kids, but I'm not sure between exactly what specialty. Right now interested in ENT, Peds EM, and Peds Cardio. I would appreciate any thoughts people have!

Case
Pros

  • Hometown, so I know the city, have family and friends there
  • Pass fail with no class rank first two years
  • Great Research
  • Amazing new facility being built for next year
  • Protected research block
  • Great hospital for rotations
  • Match list is incredible
  • I have the option to live with family and commute after the first year if I really want
  • More free time during the week (shorter class blocks)
  • PBL
Cons
  • 17k more expensive per year (68k total)
  • Associated Children's hospital isn't great
  • Don't know anyone going to the school
  • School starts Mid July and I am on a contract through the end of July for work
  • Lectures aren't recorded but aren't mandatory either
Cincy
Pros
  • 17k cheaper per year (68k total)
  • I could live with someone I know also going to the school
  • Children's hospital is amazing
  • Great Peds match (mostly to Cincy Childlren's itself)
  • Doesn't start until August (after my contract period)
Cons
  • Not as familiar with the city (didn't like the area as much either)
  • Only know a couple people in the city
  • P/F but with a class rank
  • Match list for non-peds isn't great
  • Weekly quizzes

Thanks!

Have you talked to your employers about this? How will this work if you decide to matriculate to Case?

Its my own company, so it is flexible, just a bit annoying. My partners are okay with it, and I would just have to make up the hours in June and work about 10-15 hrs/week through the end of August.

Case has both Cleveland Clinic Children’s and Rainbow Babies and children’s. Neither is as prolific as Cincy children’s but Rainbow is a nationally recognized center as well.

Our choices seem very similar, same schools, same hometown, same finances. I just don’t have the strong pediatric interest you do. PM me if you want to talk about it more

I chose UC, largely because I am interested in Peds and/or EM (similar to you). I'm an M2 here now.

Also, I have a few comments...
  • Do not make your decision solely on the money. If it comes down to that in the end, fine. But I really don't think that should have a lot of weight in your decision. I'm so far in debt that I wouldn't even notice the difference between very very much in debt vs very very very much in debt lol
  • Weekly quizzes are only for the first semester. After that, it's every other week. I think of them as a plus rather than a con, as it helps keep us on track.
  • I'd say our M4's matched pretty darn well, not sure how we stack up against Case though.

How is the internal ranking at Cincy? Were there other major factors leading you your decision?

I didn't mean to suggest Cincy's match list was bad at all. It's great! Case just has an unbelievable list that's a little better. Thanks for the input!

Edit (I misread your question) -- UC ranks students into quartiles based on their performance in each course. This is true for both pre-clinical and clinical years.

The biggest factor in my decision to go to UC was the positive vibes that I got from faculty & students! Very collaborative place, with emphasis on the mental health of students.

I don't know about rank for the internal med residency program, but I will say that most people don't come into med school already knowing where they're going for residency. We do have lots of opportunities for exploring internal medicine though, through research and our Internal Medicine Student Interest Group 🙂

I think he/she was talking about internal ranking into quartiles for grades, not the internal medicine program at UCMC

I would definitely chose Case over UC, not saying that UC is bad though! 97%+ of M4s at Case match to their top choice residency. According to my friend there, the curriculum offers TONS of time to study for Step, and the student atmosphere is super friendly. I would be thrilled to have family at a stone's throw away. Having support during four years of rigorous training can't be underestimated. Congrats OP!

Completely unrelated, but I think the microsoft holo-lens for anatomy sounds so cool haha.

Not even close Case is a better program, cost difference is pretty much negligible and most importantly you'll have a better support network.
