Does anyone out there have an idea of how many people Case takes of its hold list?

I am great at getting waitlisted or put on hold. If anyone needs advice on how to almost get in medical school shoot me a pm. 😡

What I know about the hold list is that it's not actually the waitlist. I think they put a decent number of people on the hold list every year; I'm there myself. I'm thinking that they only accept the spectacular applicants early on and put everyone else on hold. If anyone knows otherwise feel free to crush my hopes :meanie:

I was on the hold list last year and here is how it worked last year, when Dr. Kirby was still the dean of admissions. Applicants who were not accepted were put on the hold list and basically waited until May 15th. Around the first of May the admissions committee holds a meeting and reviews everyone on the hold list. They then decide if to grant you a spot on the official wait list or reject you. Many people are put on hold and then their file is reviewed like I said above. I would suggest that you just wait because, as I was told, there is no chance of acceptance until after May 15th at this point. I would send a couple of update letters and letters of intent/interest there in the spring. I would then start calling about your status in May. I know of about 5-10 people who got off the wait list last year.

So, I am on hold too, my impression was you get reviewed regularly and may get a letter in the mail any time saying you are in, but not your out. Then come mid-April they either axe you, officially wait list you, or accept you... Let me know if this sounds accurate.

But how many people actually get placed in the "Hold" category?

I agree with the ALOT. I think that they mentioned that at my interview, a few are accepted, a few are rejected all the others are put on hold.

That's the impression I got from the wording of their letter. But everyone here has said that they don't accept anyone off the hold list until April or May or whenever.

Kazema, your profile is like mine except a little more extreme. good luck.

They restated that they are rolling admissions. Maybe that means they select a few from the hold list each application review. But that just may be wishful thinking. 👍

Don't forget that Dr. Kirby is retiring this fall. He is not the current Dean of Admissions. The impression I got from my hold letter was that our applications would be reviewed and we could hear from them at any point, but the latest we would hear of any final decision is April 15. I think A LOT of us are on the hold list, and only a few exceptional applicants were accepted (just look at mdapplicants.com). There's still hope for all of us.....

Hold is not the same as waitlist. It is not even necessarily bad news. I am on hold at Case Western and Cleveland Clinic and I called Cleveland Clinic to check my status. They said I was very high on the list (i.e. would be very surprised if I wasn't accepted) just they were very conservative with how many they accept right away. I believe it is the same with Case. They just don't want to load up the class too much on the front end before seeing more candidates. I have a feeling around mid-Dec. the "hold" list will start to move.

I don't want to try to bring anybody down, but "you will continued to be reviewed at each committee meeting, etc." is exactly the same as what they were saying last year. To my knowledge no one (on SDN at least) was accepted from the continuing review of the hold list. However, as someone mentioned above, the hold list was eventually whittled down into a waitlist sometime in the very late spring - April or May. At that point I withdrew from the waitlist, so I didn't notice if there was much movement. I only say this because I was anxiously checking the mail everyday from October to April, thinking that I could be accepted at any time, and that was really not the case. It might be different this year, but so far all of you are describing the exact same situation as last year.

Good luck! It's a great school and hopefully you will all get it! 😀

just be careful on how you interpret what they tell you there when you call. dr. hutzler is extremely nice and he's very helpful. but, i think, with that, he tends to be mis-leading by telling a lot of people that they have "favorable positions" on the hold list. he told me this last year and i was extremely optimistic about my chances. but, in the end ... no dice. i spoke to a few other people who had the same thing happen. if it's anything like last year, they're not going to take any further action on your app until around april 15. so, sit tight. definitely show interest - write letters, etc. this is probably important at all schools, but i caught the gist that it's especially important for cclcm (such a unique atmosphere and all). also, what cclcm did last year was to break the hold list down into waitlist and rejection. this happened very late, around mid april, and i believe that very few people got onto the waitlist and very few were accepted. check last year's posts - some are very extensive (neurotic, if you will). i didn't apply to case, so i don't know how parallel the processes are. anyway, best of luck. cclcm is an amazing place, to say the least.

I understand your point and it is well taken. However, I think I have developed a pretty good filter for those "hang in there, you're a good candidate" remarks, and those that are really on point. I could be wrong. I asked about some of the things that you mention. I am basing my opinion not as much on what was said as how it was said. All of us need to keep in mind that is it still very EARLY, and they are going to want to see who else is out there after the Aug. MCAT and look at those candidates (going on now until whenever) before filling up their class. With only 32 students, they cannot afford to "miss" as much as a larger program. I

Well, the overall impression I got from this thread is that no one is really for sure how the hold list works. If you go to Case please let us know! 👍

Alright, I'll let you have that title. I was really getting sick of it. JK. Good Luck! 👍

MCJAY WHAT I WROTE ABOVE IS EXACTLY HOW THE CASE HOLD LIST IS RUN. I KNOW PEOPLE WANT TO REMAIN POSITIVE BUT THE LETTER THEY SENT YOU IS THE SAME ONE THEY SENT ME LAST YEAR. I asked Dr. Kirby what the term "continue to review you file means" and he basically said you are in the running for the wait list, not for acceptance. Unless things have changed drastically its run exactly the same way. ALSO, CLEVELAND CLINIC is a little different. They actually whittled their wait list down several times before accepting the final class. I was on the wait list until about two weeks before classes started. Several other SDNers were also on the list and got cut earlier in the game. The Clinic is a crap shoot. Heard of one person who was less qualified and got in, while others got passed over. I do know that continuing to update my file kept me in the running at CCLM.

Once you get an interview at Case, you have about a 50% chance of getting in. Period. That is what the numbers are. So, if the hold is for a "chance" at the wait-list, then so-be-it. Some people get rejected after the interview, so based on my math, your chances go up to above 50% if you are not in that group. So, from how I see it, my chances went up by being placed on hold.

Also, being placed on "hold" in November is different than being placed on "hold" in March. Until now, they have not seen all of the candidates. There will be good/better candidates that fill out their apps. late and took the Aug. MCAT. You don't accept 165 people in Oct/Nov.

Ahh, I know two people who interviewed late in the game. Aprilish and got put on the wait list, they both got in. I interviewed in Oct. and I didn't get in off the wait list. A friend of mine interviewed second week in Sept, hold list, then wait list -no acceptance. When you interview has no relation to whether you get in off the wait list. Atleast from the several people I have seen. The wiat list is ranked according to what serveral in admissions told me.

Wait-list means they have filled the class up. It only becomes an issue after every candidate has been interviewed. People come off the wait-list ONLY when a candidate that has been accepted turns their spot down. It has no relevance on the hold list. The hold list means they like you as a candidate (at least well enough not to reject you right away). They can still accept you AT ANY TIME either before all candidates are seen, or after. They can also place you on the wait-list. Some people will interview early and never get in. It means that the Admissions Comm. found 165+ other candidates that they like better. Someone who interviewed in April could have been one of those. The point is, only STELLAR applicants get accepted at top schools early in the game. As the pool of applicants is later clarified, some of the candidates they saw earlier that were placed on the hold list get accepted and never placed on the wait-list. I am not saying because you interview in October you are a better candidate than someone in April, I am just saying there is still alot of unknown ahead. Ad Coms have to factor in for that. The two that got in who interviewed in April would have gotten in no matter when they interviewed. That is why they have to keep spots open, hence a "hold" list.

actually Case doesn't really reject anyone right away after an interview - just waitlist or acceptance. that's what my interview group was told anyway. they said if you make it to their interview stage, you're a pretty decent applicant and they don't like to reject anyone right off the bat.

You are in denial. No chance of acceptance off the hold list. That is the way it was explained to me by several in admissions.

when i interviewed there, they told me that i could receive one of three types of letters. acceptance, waitlist, reject

Deleted because I finally realized this discussion wasn't getting me anywhere.

Ouch, all caps! The "continue to review you file" on the "hold" letter I got was a little ambiguous. Everything is clear now, crystal clear. Thanks for your help. 👍

I just got put on hold on Case. Even though I don't know what my chances are of getting in (interview was so-so) I really liked the school. What kind of updates are we supposed to send in? Transcripts, LOI...?
