  1. Pre-Dental
Yes.. another one these. Can't decide between the 3. All are great programs, but I'm worried that the 3-year is going to be too killer at UOP. I'm a CA res.

Case Western Reserve
Cost: $420,000 (12-month budget)
Class Size: About 80

Pros:
  • Chance to explore new city/state which is actually not that bad
  • Snowy weather is so nice (yes, I currently live in it, I know what I'm talking about)
  • Graduate from a school that is very reputable, especially for its MD program
  • Fantastic clinical program, experience with patients begins D1 (sealants program)
  • Faculty care about you
  • Get longer breaks
  • Scrubs to school
  • New school by D3 for clinical

Cons:
  • Campus and area around it dangerous
  • Can’t rely on public transportation; will probably need car and have to spend money on that.
  • Because 4 years, might deal with more “fluff” classes
  • Campus getting a new location; this should be concerning because the faculty going to be focused on that and not on you.
UOPacific (San Francisco, CA)
Cost: $461,000 (12-month budget)
Class Size: 141

Pros:
  • Chance to live in a very exciting city
  • State of the art facilities and equipment
  • Fantastic weather all year round
  • Done in 3 years, also less “fluff” classes.
  • Public transportation is reliable and can get you anywhere; no need for car and won’t spend $$ on car expenses.
  • Very safe area, building locked with security guard inside entrance.
  • Excellent clinical program
  • Faculty care about you

Cons:
  • Concerned that curriculum will be more difficult to handle than what current/past students tell me.
  • Have to dress business casual
  • Not as long of breaks to catch up and breathe.

Temple
Cost: ~$380 (9-month or 12-month??)
Class Size: 140

Pros:
  • Philadelphia would be an exciting city to live in!
  • Efficient public transportation, don’t need car
  • Definitely cheapest of 3
  • Fantastic clinical program, comparable to Case and UOP. Will definitely train you well.
  • Really great faculty that cares about you.
  • Dress code is scrubs

Cons:
  • Not as well known
  • Campus not too safe
  • Mandatory class attendance, can only miss 20%.
  • WREB in New York; if patients don’t go, fail.

In this case I'd vote UoP. Don't worry about the difficulty. They have a very low attrition rate. If most of the starting candidates can make it, so can you.

Also, congratulations on your awesome acceptances 🙂

I vote UOP too. It's more expensive but there's one less year for interest to accumulate and will give you an extra year of earning potential.

The area around Case isn't as bad as people hype it up to be. I've been there many times and as long as you don't hang out at night and use common street smarts you should be okay. Campus security is pretty good too.

"WREB in New York; if patients don’t go, fail."

elaborate please?

I loved UoP. Almost went there. Great program, excellent facilities, and top-notch faculty + staff.

I'd pick UOP. 3 years vs. 4 years. Plus, everything about that school looks great... and San Francisco! Ultimately, the decision is one of personal preference. Many out of state students would pick UOP because Cali, but you're from Cali so the decision is based on what you want.

Daang, happy with all the UOP love 🙂. I don't know if you included it in your cost, but cost of housing in SF compared to Cleveland will be a big difference as well. I suppose to counter that you do get out a year earlier at UOP, but keep in mind you're not paying loans with pre-tax money.

When is Case set to move buildings? If it's mid-way through your clinic experience that is pretty significant.. I know when UOP moved it was decent hassle for the 2nd-3rd years moving clinics midway through their clinic years.. it has been more stable now that entering classes have not known the old building & don't have to worry about learning difference systems and locations, but it's worth finding out.

Also, if it is true, the NERB not going to Philly is definitely a big hassle.. with the patient demographic that dental schools attract, I would not feel confident finding someone that would want to travel all the way out to NY to be part of your exam. That being said, what do current Temple grads say? Surely they must be doing okay if they all graduate and get licensed?

From the many times you've written it though, it does seem like you are leaning more against UOP because of the added difficulty of a 3 year program, in which case both Temple or Case are both great schools too, and would stretch out the learning to a comfortable 4 years.

Hey! What were your stats? I haven't heard back from these schools
