I am applying this cycle in categorical peds but still considering triple board, though I feel I need more information which I do not foresee being able to garner prior to an interview visit. Does it look awful to apply to both programs at one location? I do not want to hurt my chances in either by applying to both, and at this point would choose straight categorical if I had to. I'm honestly just not sure i can rule out TB completely and willing to consider it through interview visits but do not want to muddle my application/hurt my chances in any way.😕

Thanks in advance!

I'm hoping you've figured things out, but when I saw you hadn't gotten a reply yet, I decided to chime in....

I am actually going into child psych, and I thought about the triple boards.... Most of the people who do triple boards end up doing niche work within child psychiatry (eating disorders, consults in a children's hospital) rather than practicing both general pediatrics and child psychiatry. So, if you are thinking pediatrics over psychiatry, that might be a clear indicator that a peds residency is your better bet.

If during residency you decide that you are more interested in child psychiatry than pediatrics, you can always apply for a PGY-2 position in psychiatry after your intern year in pediatrics or go to the one of the spots in the pediatric portal program (a pilot three year program training pediatricians to become child psychiatrists)

If you do decide to apply to both at the same institutions, I think you could frame it in a pretty appealing way. You're interested in taking care of children with overlapping medical and psychiatric issues, and you are still trying to figure out which training program will best prepare you for this....
