In sending out applications, I am wondering what the advantage of doing an advanced position over a categorical. I would think that moving 1 extra time after only a year would be a drawback to most people and make categorical positions the most desirable. Is there some advantage to applying to advanced positions, and if I apply to both does that count as 1 app or 2? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's mostly personal preference. Like you said some people don't want to move twice. I however had my sights set on doing a nice TY to give me time to prep for residency. There were a few within the area of my med school so I didn't really have to move. Also, many programs have a mix of categorical and advanced positions so if you're ranking based on the the anesthesiology program, you'll likely be ranking the categorical and advanced spots one after the other. Only ranking one type would limit the spots available to you.

It counts as 1 app in terms of fees.
